Supporting your cardiovascular health doesn't have to mean making drastic changes overnight. Small, consistent lifestyle choices can have a lasting impact!

Here are six ways to give your heart the care it deserves:

🚶 1. Keep Moving: Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate physical activity each week. Start small and gradually build a routine.

🥗 2. Nourish Your Body: Focus on a Mediterranean style diet rich in vegetables, fruits, whole grains, healthy fats, and fiber. Limit excess sodium, added sugars, and alcohol.

🌿 3. Create a Healthier Environment: Reduce exposure to to***co smoke and unnecessary pollutants. Choose safer household and personal care products when possible.

😴 4. Prioritize Sleep: Most adults benefit from 7–9 hours of quality sleep each night. Establish a consistent bedtime routine and limit screens before bed.

🧘 5. Manage Daily Stress: Meditation, deep breathing, prayer, mindfulness, and gratitude can help support emotional and physical well-being.

💊 6. Focus on Essential Nutrients: Nutrients such as omega-3 fatty acids and magnesium play important roles in cardiovascular function.

Your heart works hard for you every day. Make time to take care of it!

When it comes to cardiovascular health, chronic inflammation and other risk factors can gradually affect the health of your blood vessels.

Several lifestyle and health factors may contribute to increased cardiovascular risk, including:
🔴 Elevated blood sugar
🔴 High blood pressure
🔴 Poor nutrition
🔴 Smoking
🔴 Lack of physical activity
🔴 Excess body weight
🔴 Chronic stress
🔴 Genetic and hormonal factors

While we can't control every risk factor, there are many positive changes we can make to support our heart health.

Regular movement, balanced nutrition, quality sleep, and stress management can all help support healthy blood vessels and reduce cardiovascular risk.

Small changes today can make a big difference for your future health.

Your blood vessels do much more than transport blood. Healthy arteries are flexible, allowing blood to flow efficiently throughout your body. Over time, chronic inflammation can contribute to damage within the blood vessel walls.

One important protective layer is called the glycocalyx, which helps maintain healthy blood vessel function. When blood vessels become damaged, fatty deposits called plaque can accumulate in the artery walls—a condition known as atherosclerosis.

As plaque builds up, arteries can narrow and become less flexible, increasing the risk of:
❤️ High blood pressure
❤️ Heart attack
❤️ Stroke
❤️ Poor circulation

The good news? Understanding the connection between inflammation and cardiovascular health is an important step toward prevention.

At TIH, we believe education and proactive lifestyle choices can make a meaningful difference in your long-term wellness.

Understanding Your Cardiovascular System. Your heart works around the clock, but have you ever stopped to think about the incredible system that keeps your blood circulating?

Your cardiovascular system is made up of your heart, blood vessels, and blood, all working together to deliver oxygen and essential nutrients throughout your body.

Here's something amazing: Your body contains approximately 60,000 miles of blood vessels! That's enough to circle the Earth more than twice!

These vessels include arteries, veins, and tiny capillaries, each playing an essential role in keeping your body functioning.

At TIH, we believe understanding how your body works is the first step toward better health.

Over the next several posts, we'll explore the important role of blood vessels, how chronic inflammation can affect cardiovascular health, and simple lifestyle changes that can make a meaningful difference.

The good news is that everyday habits can play an important role in supporting healthy blood sugar regulation and insulin sensitivity.

🥗 Look at what’s on your plate. Reducing added sugars and highly refined carbohydrates while balancing meals with protein, healthy fats, fiber-rich foods and complex carbohydrates can help support steadier blood sugar.

🏃 Get moving. Exercise helps improve insulin sensitivity and glucose uptake. A combination of aerobic activity and resistance training can be especially beneficial for metabolic health.

🧘 Manage stress. Chronic stress can affect blood sugar regulation. Meditation, therapy, relaxation practices and regular movement can all be useful tools for managing stress.

At Total Integrative Health, we work with patients using an whole-person approach to identify factors that may be contributing to insulin resistance and support better metabolic health.

Interested in learning more? Talk with the TIH team about your metabolic health and whether further evaluation may be appropriate for you.

Insulin resistance can develop gradually, and many people may not realize it is happening.

When cells become less responsive to insulin, the body may compensate by producing even more of it to keep blood sugar regulated. Over time, insulin resistance may be associated with concerns such as:
• Weight gain or difficulty managing weight
• Elevated blood pressure
• Skin tags
• Irregular menstrual cycles
• Inflammation and joint discomfort
• Increased cardiovascular risk

The challenge? Insulin resistance may be present for years before blood sugar reaches the range associated with diabetes.

That’s one reason looking at the bigger picture of metabolic health can be so important.

Next in Part 3: everyday habits that can support healthy blood sugar and insulin sensitivity.

Insulin is one of the body’s essential hormones—and it plays a major role in how we use the food we eat for energy.

When you eat, carbohydrates are broken down into glucose (sugar), which enters the bloodstream. In response, the pancreas releases insulin, which acts like a key—helping glucose move from the bloodstream into your cells, where it can be used for energy.

But when the body is frequently exposed to high amounts of sugar and refined carbohydrates, it may need to produce more and more insulin to manage blood sugar.

Over time, cells can become less responsive to insulin. This is known as insulin resistance.

In Part 2, we’ll look at some of the signs associated with insulin resistance—and why it can develop long before diabetes is diagnosed.
