Bath. Book. Pajamas. Quiet time. And then, my favorite part: the blessing.

Right before the lights go off, place your hand on your child’s head and speak a few words over them. β€œYou are loved. You are safe. Rest well.” It takes 30 seconds, and it becomes the anchor of the whole routine, the moment everything else has been building toward.

β€œI will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, Lord, only makest me dwell in safety.” Psalm 4:8

A good routine isn’t about rigid rules. It’s about predictability your child can trust. And ending it with a blessing gives that predictability a little extra weight.

Separation anxiety isn’t a phase to fix β€” it’s a sign of a healthy attachment. πŸ’›
It tends to show up around 8 months, again around 15 months, and again around age 2. Every child’s timeline looks a little different, and it ebbs and flows rather than following a straight line.

Yes, the crying and the constant need to be close to you can be exhausting. But think about what it really means: your little one loves being with their favorite people so much, they don’t want to be anywhere else.

That’s not something to fix. That’s something to be proud of.

🌊 A little news from Seaside Sleep Consulting...

For the past couple of years, I've stepped back to take care of my family and my mom β€” and I wouldn't trade that time for anything. But I'm easing back in, and I'm so excited to start working with families again.

I won't be taking on a full caseload right away. Instead, I'm opening up a limited number of spots for families I can really pour into β€” the kind of one-on-one, personalized support that got Seaside started in the first place.

Since it's the middle of summer travel season (and I know so many of you are living out of suitcases right now!), I put together a free Traveling Family's Sleep Guide to help you protect sleep on the road, in hotel rooms, and everywhere in between.

🧳 Grab it here: ssctravel.link/freebie

If you've been waiting for the right time to reach out, this is it. Spots are limited, so send me a message if you'd like to talk.

I talk to a lot of parents to who tell me their child dropped their second nap when they turned 1. Every single time, I tell them it was too early. There is a fake transition around that time due to developmental leaps. ⠀

So how do you know when your kiddo is ready to drop? Most children drop their 2nd nap around 15 - 18 months. Signs that your child is ready - your child boycotts either the am or pm nap on a regular basis (2 weeks or longer). Since we want to continue with the healthy afternoon nap, you can begin by capping the morning nap by 15 minutes every few days until you find the magic combo. If you are at the point where you are going to cap it less than an hour, drop it! ⠀

How old was your kiddo when they transitioned from 2 naps to 1 nap?

Consumer Reports recently shared that "Joe Biden signed into law the Safe Sleep for Babies Act, which bans two dangerous infant sleep products: inclined sleepers and crib bumper pads, both of which are unsafe for infant sleep and have been linked with more than 200 reported deaths."
I am so thankful these products are being recalled. The heartbreaking part is there are still so many unsafe products out there. Please share this post with other parents and let's spread the word!

On March 13th, we will move our clocks one hour ahead. So what does that mean? A 6am wake up time will really be 7am, right? Not necessarily. For those of us who have early risers, they may sleep in for a day or two. Unfortunately, our bodies will adjust to the new schedule and revert back to our natural wake up time. Sorry parents! Here are some tips to the transition as painless as possible.

We want to know whether we have a sensitive sleeper or not. A sensitive sleeper usually has trouble with any changes to their sleep location or schedule. Depending on if you have a sensitive sleeper or a child that goes with the flow, you may decide to start thinking about a plan to adjust to daylight savings time or decide to do absolutely nothing!β €

Aim for that extra boost of light in the morning. With it staying light longer, we may struggle with getting our children to bed. Use blackout or room darkening curtains to your advantage at bedtime as well. If you have an older child that uses a form of β€œOk to Wake” clock, make sure you set the new time an hour later and set the expectations up front. β €

In the days leading up to the time change start with little adjustments to their schedule. Every couple of days, adjust bedtime by 15 minutes. By the end of the week, you will be close to new adjusted time bedtime and a normal wake up time. You can do a similar adjustment after the time change and achieve the same results.β €

What have you done in the past to help make Daylight Savings easier for your family?

πŸ™‹ Raise your hand if you are already dreading the time change next weekend. Yep, we turn our clocks back on Sunday, Nov 7. Here are some tips to help you get through it.

🌞 GET MORE SUNLIGHT. Aim for that extra boost of sunlight in the morning as it will help with the adjustment. Get outside after you wake up!

πŸ”• CURB THE EARLY AM WAKE UP. Be sure to block out any unwanted light to eliminate early wakings by using black out curtains to your advantage.

πŸ“œ SET THOSE EXPECTATIONS UP FRONT. If your kiddo has an β€œOK To Wake” clock, make sure you set the new time an hour earlier and set the expectations up front!

⏰SHIFT THE SCHEDULE. If you have a sensitive sleeper and want to have a plan, here is an idea for you! The days leading up to the time change start with slight adjustments to their schedule. By the end of the week, you will be at the new adjusted times. You can make similar adjustments after the time change and achieve the same results. Check out the table for an example. Be sure to let me know how it goes!
