🥛 The U.S. dietary guidelines changed in January

Three changes to know:
• Dairy: whole milk and full-fat dairy are now included (before: fat-free or low-fat)
• Saturated fat: still under 10% of calories
• Protein: 1.2 to 1.6 grams per kilogram of body weight a day

Your own needs can differ, so ask your doctor or dietitian what fits you.

Which of these changes surprises you most?

🧼 The handwashing moments everyone forgets

Bathroom and mealtime we know. The CDC also lists these moments:
• After you blow your nose, cough or sneeze
• After taking out the trash
• Before and after treating a cut
• After a diaper change, or helping a child in the bathroom
• After touching pets, their food or treats

No sink? Use a sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol, but soap and water works best.

🧠 Why you do not remember being a baby

It has a name: infantile amnesia. For a long time the explanation was that a baby's brain cannot make memories yet. A new study suggests it can.

Yale researchers scanned 26 babies, from 4 months to 2 years old, in an MRI while they looked at new pictures. Later, the babies looked longer at pictures they had already seen. The hippocampus, a memory area of the brain, was active, and most strongly in babies older than 12 months.

The memories can form. Why we cannot reach them later is still unknown.

What is the earliest thing you can remember, and how old were you?

Does oatmeal really calm heartburn? 🥣

It is not an antacid and it won’t neutralize anything. But if you get heartburn a lot, it is a good breakfast, and doctors do recommend it. The catch is what you put on top.

Undo it:
❌ Whole milk
❌ Chocolate
❌ Citrus

Keep it calm:
✅ Water or lower-fat milk
✅ Banana
✅ Berries
✅ Raisins and a pinch of cinnamon

Stay sitting up for a couple of hours after you eat, and try to finish dinner at least 3 hours before bed.

Heartburn more than twice a week? Go and see a doctor.

What goes on your oatmeal? 👇

🩺 Why your blood pressure can be higher at the doctor's office

Being in a medical setting can set off a short stress response, and the cuff catches it. It has a name: white-coat hypertension.

• About 15% to 30% of people with high blood pressure readings have it
• About 5% a year go on to develop true hypertension
• A diagnosis is confirmed outside the office, with home readings or 24-hour monitoring

At home: take 2 readings a minute apart and write down both. And ask your doctor before changing any medication.

🏠 A Doctor2me doctor can come to your home, where readings can be more reliable.

💛 63 million people in the U.S. look after someone

That is about one adult in four. The average caregiver is 51, and six in ten are women (AARP and National Alliance for Caregiving, 2025).

In an AARP survey (2023):
• 56% said the role makes it hard to care for their own mental health
• 41% said they feel lonely
• 4 in 10 rarely or never feel relaxed

What helps, in their own words: music, talking with friends or family and exercising.

Caring for yourself is caring for them, too.

What is one small thing you do for yourself every week?

Pool exercise: why water is kind to stiff joints

Standing in water, your legs carry only part of your weight:
💧 Hip deep: about half your body weight
💧 Chest deep: closer to a third
So knees and hips move without taking the full load.

Therapy pools are kept warm, which loosens stiff joints. And the water pushes back whichever way you move, so you build strength with every step.

Easy ways to start:
🚶 Pool walking: simplest option, aim for at least waist-high water
🤸 Water aerobics: cardio and strength in one class
🏊 Swimming: works nearly every muscle

Check with your doctor first, especially if you are frail.

Which one would you try first? 👇
