Living far away from home, I was looking for myself. People often think leaving is an answer to problems, being far can help distance troubling life, escape the past as if somewhere else was holding a better future.
I chose Vietnam for a better future. Actually, Vietnam chose me and taught me the greatest lesson: Peace is in the present, peace is within. Home is within not anywhere else. I discover the wisdom of Thich Nhat Hanh, a Vietnamese monk (1926-2022). With his simple words, he made me realised that I was the mud and wherever I would go, I would bring it with me. The good think is that now that I was aware of it, I could grow some Lotus from my mud, embracing who I was.
Five themes are important to me helping me in my spirituality:
The present moment: I arrive in the present moment, where I find peace within myself.
The profond ecology: I remember that I am part of the Earth, and I care for her as I care for myself.
Peace start within: I embrace my suffering with compassion and choose thoughts, words and actions that nourish peace.
Everyday actions: I bring my full presence to each simple action and discover the sacred in everyday life.
The lotus and the mud: I embrace the mud of my experience and allow understanding, compassion and joy to bloom.
Thich Nhat Hanh’s teachings have helped me understand that I do not need to run away in order to find peace. Wherever I am, I can pause, breathe and return to the present moment.
I can come home to myself.
