Chapter 5: Step by Calculated Step

Footsteps of the Daring

As a natural risk-taker, Nway Hnin swiftly pieced together the clues and devised a bold stratagem. Her ambitions stretched far beyond the stolen satchel of cash; she saw an opening to orchestrate a far grander score—a high-stakes partnership, or perhaps a lucrative extortion scheme.
Shedding her signature rugged denim, she deliberately slipped into a pair of worn, faded pajamas, disguising herself as a meek, penniless girl.
She then made her way to the Thazin Hotel to scout the ground. Tactfully talking her way past the front desk staff, she arrived directly at the door of Min Lwin’s suite.
Nway Hnin knocked softly.
The door swung open, and Min Lwin himself appeared before her.
"Sir... are you Uncle Min Lwin? I found this leather bag discarded in the bushes near the park and came to return it. The money was already gone, but... your ID card and documents were still inside."
With wide, fluttering eyes, she played the innocent waif to perfection, extending the briefcase with both hands.
Yet Min Lwin was no ordinary quarry; he was a weathered gray fox schooled in the ruthless border badlands. Beneath the trembling voice and timid posture, his keen eye instantly caught the unmistakable edge, subtle defiance, and guarded poise of a child bred in the underworld.
"Little girl... what is your name? And who are your parents?"
Min Lwin asked, fixing her with a piercing, level stare.
"My name is... Nway Ma. I have no parents left," she lied smoothly, her expression carved in absolute neutrality.
While maintaining her facade of innocence, her fingers subtly grazed the concealed dagger nestled beneath her waistband, ready to strike at a heartbeat’s notice.
Min Lwin tossed the briefcase onto the bed. A cold, sardonic smile played at the corners of his lips as his tone shifted dramatically.
"Hah... Nway Ma, is it? A pleasant name. But you’re playing your con on the wrong mark, girl. I already know who you are’ Nway Ma,' the self-made boss ruling the Zegyo market turf. You certainly have nerves. I never imagined you’d dare walk into my room dressed in rags to put on a theatrical act. It was your pack of wolves who clubbed me last night and made off with my greenbacks, wasn't it? My man has already laid it all out for me."
At that moment, Sein Win stepped briskly out of the adjoining bathroom, his gaze cold and watchful.
Nway Hnin raised an eyebrow in surprise, yet true to her pedigree as a street boss, not a flicker of fear breached her composure. Instantly discarding her pitiful charade, her lips curved into a sharp, audacious smirk.
"Well, well... I see Uncle isn’t so easily fooled. No matter let’s lay our cards on the table. That’s right, every dollar snatched last night is sitting safely in our hands. And judging by those files, you’re none other than Arthur Zin, the borderland contraband kingpin. I didn't come here to grovel; I came to see if we could cut a bigger deal together. So, what’s it going to be? Do we do business, or do we throw down right here? Your call. I’m gaming either way."
In that cramped hotel room, two apex predators of the underworld locked eyes, measuring each other’s mettle in a battle of nerve and intellect.
"Alright then... make your pitch," Min Lwin challenged.
"My crew can handle the logistics—bringing your contraband shipments into Mandalay and running the distribution networks on the ground."
"Hah! You? “Take charge of smuggling my border shipments into Mandalay?"
Min Lwin rose from the bed, his assessing gaze sweeping over her. He turned toward his right-hand enforcer standing in the corner and gave a subtle tilt of his chin.
"Sein Win... test this girl. Let’s see if she carries real steel or just blows hot air."
"Yes, Boss."
Sein Win cracked his neck from side to side with an ominous pop and stepped forward.
Though clad in frayed pajamas, Nway Hnin’s eyes burned with unflinching resolve. Like a hardened steel rose that had once subdued the fiercest yard boss in prison, she settled into a low, coiled fighting stance within the narrow room.
"Forgive me, little sister... Boss’s orders."
With that, Sein Win launched a punishing straight punch straight at her chest.
Where an ordinary brawler would have retreated, Nway Hnin darted forward into the blind angle, slipping beneath the trajectory of his fist. Pivoting on her heels with inverted momentum, she drove an explosive upward kick straight into Sein Win’s solar plexus.
Thud—Crack!
"What? Thaing Pyaungpyan? (Myanmar martial art)!"
Min Lwin’s brow arched in genuine astonishment.
Recognizing that she could not overpower the hulking border enforcer with brute strength alone, Nwe Hnin relied on the blinding agility, dirty street tactics, and kinetic leverage honed within the penitentiary walls.
Sein Win’s heavy right hook grazed her shoulder, sending her reeling against the edge of the bed. But the instant her feet touched the floor, she whipped the bed sheet off the mattress, hurling it over Sein Win’s head to blind him before driving a vicious flying knee into his midsection.
Crash!
Sein Win slammed hard against the plastered wall.
Snarling, Sein Win tore the sheet away and whipped an overhand right toward her temple. Nwe Hnin tilted her head to the left, turned her palm outward to parry from below, and clashed forearms to deflect his momentum.
Seizing the signature principle of Thaing Pyaungpyan—turning the opponent’s peak force against himself—she hooked the back of his lead leg with her heel, twisting her leverage to uproot him.
Thump!
The towering enforcer crashed heavily onto the floorboards.
A veteran combatant, Sein Win instantly rolled into a recovery kick that caught Nway Hnin square in the ribs, sending her tumbling against the bed frame as blood trickled from her nose. Disregarding the pain, she sprang back up, propping her palms onto the floor in an inverted handstand to whip both legs around his neck in a scissor hold, slamming him down once more.
Both fighters were breathing raggedly, tensing their sinews for a second clash, when—
"Splendid! That's enough, both of you. Stand down!"
Min Lwin clapped his hands, his commanding voice cutting through the tension.
Sein Win unclenched his bruised fists and stepped back. Nway Hnin wiped the smear of crimson from her lip with the back of her hand; her defiant gaze still locked onto Min Lwin.
Min Lwin burst into hearty, appreciative laughter.
"Ha ha ha! Magnificent! You truly are a woman of mettle. That was the classical Thaing Pyaungpyan, wasn't it? Unorthodox, lightning-fast, and devastating. In all my years, I've never seen a woman weather Sein Win’s fists and mount a counter-offensive like that."
"Where did you learn Thaing Pyaungpyan?"
Min Lwin asked.
"Under Master Shein in Taungoo."
"I acknowledge your skill. Very well... let us see what kind of fortune we can carve out in Mandalay together."
"Hold on, Master Zin... does this 'Mandalay business' involve yaba (ICE) tablets?"
"Why do you ask?" Min Lwin regarded her with curious hesitation.
"I won't touch narcotics. I refuse to trade in poison," Nwe Hnin declared, her voice ringing with absolute finality. "Behind bars, I watched too many lives turn to ash because of that filth."
Min Lwin paused, then gave an approving nod.
"Indeed... too many vultures feed on pills. The stakes are perilous, and if caught, it leads straight to the gallows. Very well... between you and me, we shall deal exclusively in uncut gemstones and arms."
Min Lwin readily conceded to her terms.
"How much schooling do you have?"
"Up to the tenth grade."
"Do you speak Chinese or English?"
"Enough to get by. I picked up English from an Anglo-Burmese inmate in Taungoo Prison, and a Chinese woman taught me conversational Mandarin in Mandalay Prison."
"Splendid. You have driven, and you have an appetite to learn."
"In that case... we head to Singapore first," Min Lwin decided.
"Singapore?" Nway Hnin’s eyes widened slightly.
"Yes. There are high-level merchants we must meet. But first, I’ll need you to be proficient with computers. Tomorrow morning, enroll in a basic computer course by the Zegyo market."
"Understood."
"And before we depart for Singapore, I shall personally instruct you in marksmanship. You have two months to master the handgun. Think you can handle it?"
To Min Lwin's challenge, Nway Hnin replied without a heartbeat of hesitation, her eyes flashing with keen determination.
"I'll master it. Truth be told, that's what I've wanted all along."
"That’s the spirit! Go, get ready. Tomorrow, we ascend to Maymyo (Pyin Oo Lwin). Out in my secluded mountain estate, you can fire all the lead your heart desires."
"What about the cash my crew took?" Nway Hnin reminded him.
"Consider your signing bonus."
"Wait... I need to take part of this money back to Taungoo to settle my mother and grandmother, then move them safely to Mandalay. Give me a week at most."
"Take two. Sein Win will come collect you in a fortnight."
"Deal."
"Sein Win, draw five million kyats and hand it over to her."
"Right away, Master Zin."
The mist-shrouded valleys of Pyin Oo Lwin rolled with lush greenery, the highland air crisp and biting.
Tucked into a hidden basin behind the hills of the Aung Chan Tha quarter, shielded by dense woodland, lay Min Lwin’s expansive private estate, where a clandestine firing range had been laid out.
There, Min Lwin personally schooled Nwe Hnin in the fundamentals of combat marksmanship.
"Lock your shoulder when you draw. Fix your gaze on the sight picture. Regulate your breathing..."
Standing behind her, Arthur Zin (Min Lwin) adjusted her grip and posture with meticulous patience.
Bang! Bang! Bang!
The sharp cracks of gunfire echoed across the highlands of Maymyo.
Possessing extraordinary natural instincts, Nway Hnin began clustering rounds tight on the silhouette targets within mere days. In their downtime, she was never idle; Sein Win and Min Lwin took turns tutoring her in computer literacy and secure communications.
Watching her progress, Arthur Zin felt a profound sense of pride and paternal warmth. For her part, Nway Hnin found herself developing a deep, unspoken filial reverence for this enigmatic mentor who treated her with both the rigor of a master and the quiet tenderness of a father.

Footsteps of Hope

Meanwhile, within the frantic corridors of the Emergency Department at Mandalay General Hospital, Staff Nurse Thet Hnin worked tirelessly through day and night, tending to the sick and wounded.
Recognized for her clinical acumen, she had been granted admission to the hospital's distinguished Orthopedic Surgical Care fellowship. Her diligence, razor-sharp efficiency, and boundless empathy had earned the enduring trust of the hospital superintendent and the senior professorial staff.
Then came a career-defining opportunity that would alter the course of her life.
The Ministry of Health was dispatching a specialized contingent to Singapore to study cutting-edge clinical advancements under the Emergency Medicine & Robotic Knee Replacement Therapy Training Program.
Because of the high-tech precision demanded by robotic arthroplasty, the surgical board had handpicked Thet Hnin from among the entire nursing cadre to accompany the senior orthopedic consultants abroad.
The fellowship entailed six months of rigorous clinical training at one of Singapore’s premier tertiary teaching hospitals, followed by another six months of embedded residency, mastering robotic computer navigation systems in the operating theater.
"Mother... I've been selected for a one-year fellowship in Singapore! I'm traveling alongside the chief orthopedic surgical team!"
When Thet Hnin broke the news, tears of joy welled up in May Thet's eyes.
To think that the fragile child she had carried away from the tears of Lai-hka, raised through bitter poverty in the dusty lanes of Mandalay, was now crossing oceans as an overseas medical scholar.
"Go, my daughter... learn with all your heart. Don't worry about me; I will tend our little grocery store in peace. Grandfather and Grandmother are right here beside me. Once you settle in Singapore, remember to pay a visit to Uncle Swe, Auntie Myat, and your sister Swe Hnin."
"I will, Mother."
Within days, brimming with aspiration and hope, Thet Hnin boarded a flight from Yangon International Airport with the surgical delegation, bound for the gleaming terminal of Singapore Changi Airport.

Resolute Strides

Inside a high-tech subterranean briefing theater in Singapore...
Senior police executives and regional envoys from across ASEAN sat in solemn formation around a grand conference table.
This was the Trans-Country Crime & Illegal Black-Market Joint Taskforce Meeting, convened under the auspices of Interpol.
Projected upon the massive display wall were intricate topological maps tracing illicit trafficking corridors running along the porous frontiers of Myanmar, Thailand, and Laos. Standing before the screen with a laser pointer in hand, Assistant Investigator Swe Hnin delivered her intelligence briefing with crisp, unwavering authority.
"Good morning, delegates. As shown on the tactical display, illicit transfers of black-market mu*****ns and conflict-zone gemstones across ASEAN borders have surged by more than fifty percent over the past quarter."
Swe Hnin modulated her tone, drawing a sharp red laser circle around the tri-border nexus as she unpacked the operational charts, trend analytics, and supply-chain logistics.
"Our corroborated intelligence confirms that this sophisticated syndicate is orchestrated by a covert armed trafficking faction rooted in the Golden Triangle. They are aggressively forging ties with regional power brokers and local underworld syndicates to consolidate an expanded trans-national network. Credible intel indicates that high-ranking emissaries from this faction are scheduled to slip covertly into Singapore in the coming days to finalize major supply contracts."
Swe Hnin deliberately held back the classified dossiers containing specific suspects' profiles and cryptographic files, safeguarding operational security until actionable proof could be pinned down.
Senior police officials from Malaysia, Thailand, and Laos nodded in grave concurrence with her assessment.
"Very well, Assistant Investigator Swe Hnin. We shall maintain active surveillance on the Golden Triangle syndicate’s movements. The moment they cross into our respective jurisdictions or set foot on Singaporean soil, all ASEAN member states will mobilize our shared intelligence assets to provide full operational backing," an ASEAN delegate pledged firmly.
"Thank you, ladies and gentlemen. This time, we intend to catch the Golden Triangle cartel red-handed on Singaporean soil and dismantle their network down to its roots."
Swe Hnin closed the briefing with a sharp, confident smile, poised to execute her decisive strike.
Among the foreign delegates present in the chamber sat a liaison officer representing Myanmar: Senior Special Investigator Nyi Nyi Zaw. A seasoned field operative dispatched from Yangon, he had spent years tracking the movements of cross-border syndicates operating between the Golden Triangle and mainland Myanmar.
Once the council adjourned and the room cleared, only Swe Hnin and Nyi Nyi Zaw remained behind. Cradling a leather dossier, Nyi Nyi Zaw walked over to her desk.
"Assistant Investigator Swe Hnin... an exceptional presentation. In truth, our intelligence apparatus in Myanmar has already identified the ringleader anchoring this Golden Triangle network. However, their cells move with extreme fluidity and rotate operatives frequently, making it exceptionally difficult to pin a target down," Nyi Nyi Zaw explained in an undertone.
Swe Hnin’s eyes narrowed with keen interest. "Is that so, Inspector Nyi Nyi Zaw? Who is he?"
Nyi Nyi Zaw retrieved a glossy photograph from his file and slid it across the mahogany table.
It was the portrait of Arthur Zin—Min Lwin—the broker holding court across the borderlands.
"He resurfaced in Mandalay recently. Our sources suggest he was recruiting fresh field operatives and mixed with local street syndicates. The intelligence arrived too late to intercept him on the ground, but we now have confirmation that he is heading toward Singapore. How do you propose we structure our Action Plan?"
Swe Hnin studied the photograph of Arthur Zin intently. As her eyes traced his weathered features, an eerie, inexplicable resonance stirred deep within her chest.
"Excellent, Inspector. The field intelligence you’ve brought from Myanmar is invaluable. If he's traveling from Myanmar, his only viable option is commercial aviation. Here is our operational plan: we will not apprehend them at Changi Airport. To ensure we take down the entire network, we will shadow them discreetly until they make contact with their Singaporean buyers. You and I will split our tactical units and tail them like ghosts."
"Agreed, Swe Hnin. Keep your Interpol tactical units on standby. I will oversee close-quarters field reconnaissance."
"The moment we confirm their arrival; we move into position."
Looking down at the operational grid on the table, Nyi Nyi Zaw and Swe Hnin began drawing the invisible net tight across Singapore, laying a trap destined to snare the shadows of the underworld.
