NEURAM FOUNDATION is based in Mauritius. It promotes neurological rehabilitation that is acutely deficient in many developing countries, including Mauritius.

NEURAM was set up in 2017 as a not-for-profit Foundation to act as a vehicle for raising awareness on areas, related to neurological disabilities and for improving neurological rehabilitation care.

Dr Anba Soopramanien, a neuro-rehabilitation specialist and professor at Bournemouth University, drew inspiration for this study from his patients in the UK. Since the beginning of the pandemic, many of Dr Soopramanien's patients have stopped seeing their carers. As carers typically see many patients a day, they represent a high risk for contaminating patients, who, with their neurological conditions, are particularly susceptible to COVID-19. As a result, patients' family members (who are often old and struggle to perform a carer's duties) have had to compensate and struggle on their own. The World Federation for Neuro-Rehabilitation (WFNR) conducted a survey monkey to assess what aspects of patient's lives have been most affected by the pandemic and why.

As a member of the WFNR and president of NEURAM, Dr Anba Soopramanien wanted to conduct similar research in Mauritius, where there are very few resources available to these patients and their families. Our study investigates what resources patients need access to and how the pandemic has changed their lives. As patients rarely function alone, we are also interviewing family members to gain a holistic understanding of their experiences during the pandemic.
