My Sugar Fly My Sugar Fly is a colorful and positive blog & website about living and loving life with type 1 diab Where did this come from? What had gone wrong?

I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes (an autoimmune condition) in May of 2014. Teetering between life and death was a shock to both body and mind, and I felt mortal for the first time in my life. I am young, I eat well, I exercise, I am in great shape and I am blissfully happy! Why me and why now? Had I been robbed of the quality and number of years in my life? Was this something I could have avoided? Had I done irreversible damage to my body? Will people understand? What happens now? Born with a smile on my face, I love people and I love life. I am truthful and I am loyal. I am impulsive and I like to share. I believe in humanity, I am a positive thinker and I choose to alway see the good before the bad in the world. I am a passionate explorer of all things amazing for body, mind and soul. I am a fierce advocate and coach of creating a life you truly love – regardless of circumstances. With this in my core, My Sugar Fly was created - for you and for me. Diabetes does not define us, it does not make us less of a man/woman and it does not stop us from living and loving life to the fullest. With Love,
Red

BARING IT ALL...Baring (almost) all in public on the beach can be intimidating - my stomach is bruised from insulin injections, and I have a bright white Dexcom sensor patch on my arm. People stare, wonder and talk - full of ignorance, insecurities and fears. I may have type 1 diabetes, but the only thing contageous about me is my laughter, my compassion for people and my passion for life! 😜Do you let people's reactions to your diabetes alter how you live your life?

GREEN ROUTINE. As you know from previous posts, one of my favorite morning routine is my wheat grass shot with hot lemon/cayenne water. Here's how I prepare this quick, powerful & delicious green shot:

I grab a frozen cube of wheatgrass from my freezer and pop it into a small cup. Add fresh squeezed juice of 1/2 lemon, a pinch of Cayenne pepper and pour some hot water over it to quickly melt the frozen cube.

The grass is full of nutritious things, the warm lemon water helps get rid of toxins in your body, stabilizes your bloodsugar and kickstarts the digestion process for the day. Read more here http://bodyunburdened.com/health-benefits-warm-lemon-cayenne-pepper-water/ Bottoms up!

AVOIDING SUGAR is an one obvious way to keep your blood sugar stabile and your A1c in desired range, but it's not that easy….Sugar is in everything and often hidden under one of its many aliases...

Solution? Education & experience, and sometimes plain trial & error…Good luck! How many names of sugar are you familiar with?

GET MOVING! If you want to look & feel great, have tight blood sugar control and a strong body & mind (everybody should say yes to this!!)…work out EVERYDAY! I easy get bored, so I make sure every single workout has an aspect of 'new-ness' to keep it fun :)

Vary your workouts, vary the intensity level, vary the amount of time you work out, vary with whom you work out (alone, friend, personal trainer) and vary where you work out (outdoors, indoors, home or away). Sign up for a race & fundraiser associated with a cause you believe in - get motivated and do double good!

The most important thing is that you make time for your workout, weave it into your schedule, make it a habit, make it 'you' time and make it a part of your day that you look forward to!

You are already UNIQUE, but make sure you also pave your own unique path in life, with or without diabetes. Do what works for you, do what makes sense to you and do what makes you happy! This is what I want 'My Sugarfly' to support and represent - not only for myself, but for anybody affected by diabetes!

GIVE YOURSELF A BREAK! When you have diabetes, there is really no time of the day, or night, when you 'forget' about your condition. But last week, if only for a moment, I forgot about everything as I danced, sang and laughed my heart out.

An impromptu Monday night out in New York City, 5 good friends, food, drinks & live music by the Gypsy Kings - that will do the trick! As they say…."DANCE like nobody is watching, SING like no one can hear, and LAUGH until your face hurts"!

Having a PLAN for a SICK DAY was never on my radar, until I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. As I am recovering from a cold I realize that the best way to deal with a common cold (diabetes or not) - is with common sense.

When you have diabetes your immune system may be compromised making it easier for you to get sick and harder for you to bounce back. Your blood sugar tend to go up with an infection (virus or bacteria) and keeping your sugar within desired levels may be difficult. Perhaps you experience a lack of appetite when sick, and not eating like you should can throw off your blood sugar and leave you more exposed to high's and low's.

REST. I need a more than 8 hours of sleep per night. I need naps, I need to reduce stress (personal & professional stress) and I need TLC (tender loving care: kindness, love & attention)! My body needs both time and peace to fight off an illness. Being tired/stressed effects my blood sugar negatively!

EAT. I need consistent, nutritious, well balanced meals - and I have to eat whether I am hungry, or not. My body needs energy and strength in order to fight off a cold. Skipping, or eating un-balanced/un-healthy meals effects my blood sugar negatively!

HYDRATE. I need to drink plenty of water, tea and broth. My body needs liquids to flush out my system, aid in digestion and fight fatigue. I also keep my skin moisturized, from my lips to my toes. Being dehydrated effects my blood sugar negatively!

Pay ATTENTION. I need to closely monitor (beyond Dexcom) my blood sugar & keep a record on how I feel as the cold may mask serious symptoms. I need to be able to interpret the signs my body is sending out, obvious or not. Cold medicines and home remedies like honey effects my blood sugar negatively!

Holy HAMBURGERS! I was indifferent to this all-American favorite until I got diabetes, but today we are inseparable because of the following:

A hamburger can be a simple, affordable, quick, flexible, all-inclusive, well-balanced, available, healthy and delicious meal - a meal that can support any lifestyle, in my case type 1 diabetes. You can make it at home, at a BBQ with friends, or at a restaurant and still feel in control of what you make/eat. It can be altered to fit any lifestyle, occasion, age group, personality and mood :)

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE BURGER? My favorite is a juicy, grilled beef patty, crisp salad (more intense/spicy kind), sun-ripened tomatoes, sliced creamy avocado, thinly sliced red onion, garlic/parsley aioli and home-made non-grain/no dairy bread. YUMMY!

MUMS!

Dad suddenly yelled out "Stop the car! Look, there's superfood up there!" He pointed up a big birch tree growing along the country road. Full of curiosity we pressed our faces against the car windows & twisted our necks to get a glimpse of a big black edible fungus up on the tree trunk - the Chaga.

A few days later I had my first cup of Chaga tea. Freshly harvested from our family farm in Sweden, carefully prepared by my aunt Ingeärd. So exciting! Chaga has been considered a superfood for hundreds of years and it grows on birch-trees in the northern hemisphere, in colder climates such as Sweden….

Memorial Sloan Kettring Cancer Center writes "Laboratory and animal studies show that compounds in chaga can kill cancer cells selectively and stimulate the immune system. It may also have benefits such as reductions in fatigue and inflammation as well as increased mental sharpness" They also mention that it has shown to lower blood glucose in diabetics, it can protect the liver and also counteract aging (etc). Sounds great, but before you start experimenting, talk to your doctor!

A little smile. A word of cheer. A bit of love, from someone near. A little gift, from one held dear. Best wishes for the coming year. Have a MERRY CHRISTMAS my friends!
