🌞 August means tropical flavors are at their peak here in Florida!

Choosing produce that’s in season isn’t just great for supporting local farmers—it often means better flavor, better nutrition, and fresher food on your table.

This month’s Fresh From Florida picks include:

🥑 Avocados – Rich in healthy fats, fiber, potassium, and vitamin E.

🥭 Mangoes – Packed with vitamin C, vitamin A, and antioxidants that support immune health.

⭐ Carambola (Star Fruit) – A refreshing source of vitamin C and antioxidants. (If you have chronic kidney disease, ask your healthcare provider before consuming star fruit.)

🥭 Guava – One of the highest vitamin C fruits, plus fiber to support gut health.

💜 Passion Fruit – High in fiber and antioxidants that support digestion and blood sugar balance.

🍇 Longan – A tropical fruit containing vitamin C, copper, and polyphenols.

🥜 Peanuts – A great source of plant protein, healthy fats, and magnesium.

🍄 Mushrooms – Rich in selenium, B vitamins, and compounds that support immune function.

✨ One of the easiest ways to diversify your diet is by eating what’s naturally in season. Each month brings different nutrients, flavors, and opportunities to nourish your body.

Your menstrual cycle is one of your body’s most powerful monthly health report cards. 🩸

Yet so many women grow up hearing things like...

“Painful periods are normal.”
“Heavy bleeding just runs in your family.”
“Birth control will fix it.”
“Your labs are normal.”

While these statements may apply in certain situations, they don’t always answer the most important question:

Why are you experiencing these symptoms in the first place?

At Solara Functional Wellness, we believe your symptoms deserve curiosity—not dismissal.

✨ Painful periods.
✨ Heavy bleeding.
✨ Irregular cycles.
✨ Severe PMS.
✨ Fatigue.
✨ Infertility.
✨ Bloating.
✨ Acne.

These aren’t simply inconveniences—they can be important clues about what’s happening beneath the surface.

Functional medicine doesn’t replace your OB-GYN. It complements traditional care by looking at the bigger picture: thyroid health, ovulation, nutrition, gut health, inflammation, metabolic health, and other factors that may be contributing to your symptoms.

Because “common” doesn’t always mean optimal, and you deserve to understand your body—not just manage its symptoms.

💬 Which one of these have you been told before?

You’re taking iron... but your ferritin keeps dropping. 🤔

One of the biggest misconceptions I see in practice is the assumption that low ferritin always means you simply need more iron.

So the dose gets increased.
Maybe you switch iron brands.
Or you’re told to “just keep taking it.”

But what if the problem isn’t how much iron you’re taking?

What if your body can’t absorb it, regulate it, or keep up with its demand?

From a functional medicine perspective, low ferritin is often a clue—not the diagnosis.

Here are a few reasons I investigate before simply recommending more iron:

🩸 Gut dysfunction – SIBO, H. pylori, celiac disease, low stomach acid, or chronic gut inflammation can impair iron absorption.

🔥 Chronic inflammation – Inflammation increases hepcidin, a hormone that decreases iron absorption and limits the release of stored iron.

🦋 Thyroid dysfunction – Thyroid hormones help support stomach acid production, iron absorption, and healthy red blood cell production.

⚡ Increased iron demand – Heavy menstrual bleeding, endurance training, pregnancy, recovery from illness, or other physiologic demands can outpace what your body is able to absorb and replace.

The conventional medicine miss?

Too often, the focus becomes replacing iron instead of asking why iron stores became depleted in the first place.

Sometimes iron supplementation is absolutely the right answer.

But if your ferritin keeps falling despite treatment, your body is telling us there’s likely another piece of the puzzle that deserves attention.

That’s where functional medicine can make a meaningful difference—by looking upstream for the barriers to healing instead of focusing only on the lab value.

❤️ Remember: Ferritin is a clue. Your job isn’t just to raise the number—it’s to understand why it became low in the first place.

⬇️ Have you ever been told to “just take more iron,” but your ferritin still didn’t improve? I’d love to hear your experience. 💬

☀️ What’s in season in Florida this July?

One of the easiest ways to nourish your body is by eating foods that naturally grow during the season.

July’s Florida produce is packed with nutrients that help support:

🌿 Gut health
💧 Hydration & electrolyte balance
🧠 Brain health
❤️ Heart health
✨ Healthy skin & collagen production
⚖️ Blood sugar balance
🦠 Immune function

Seasonal produce is often fresher, more flavorful, and naturally richer in nutrients because it’s harvested at peak ripeness.

Instead of chasing the latest superfood, start by filling your plate with what’s growing close to home.

Which July fruit or vegetable is your favorite? 🍉🥑🍑 Let us know below!

What if your symptoms weren’t the problem… but the clues?

So many people spend years chasing the next supplement, diet, medication, or workout plan—only to feel like they’re right back where they started.

The truth is, your body is always communicating with you.

✨ Fatigue isn’t just about needing more sleep.
✨ Weight gain isn’t always about eating less.
✨ Bloating isn’t something you should “just live with.”
✨ Hormone symptoms rarely happen in isolation.
✨ Autoimmune disease doesn’t develop overnight.

Your symptoms are often your body’s way of saying, “Something deeper needs attention.”

At Solara, we don’t just ask “What’s wrong?” We ask “Why is this happening?”

Because when you identify and address the root cause, your body has an incredible ability to heal and thrive.

👇 Which one on this list surprised you the most?

☀️ What’s in season in Florida this June?

Eating seasonally isn’t just about supporting local farmers—it’s one of the easiest ways to get fresher, more nutrient-dense foods on your plate.

This month’s Florida produce is packed with nutrients that support:

✓ Gut health
✓ Hormone balance
✓ Blood sugar regulation
✓ Hydration
✓ Healthy aging
✓ Immune function

One of my favorite functional medicine nutrition tips: instead of focusing on what to eliminate, start by adding more seasonal produce each month.

What’s one Florida fruit or vegetable you’re adding to your cart this June? 👇

PCOS has officially been renamed to Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome (PMOS) — and this shift matters more than most people realize.

For years, women were made to believe this condition was simply about “ovarian cysts.” Meanwhile many were struggling with:

• insulin resistance
• fatigue
• stubborn weight gain
• infertility
• acne + hair changes
• inflammation
• anxiety + mood changes
• metabolic dysfunction

The reality? This has always been a whole-body condition.

As a functional medicine provider, I’m hopeful this change helps move the conversation beyond symptom suppression and toward deeper investigation into hormone health, metabolism, gut health, inflammation, stress physiology, and root-cause healing.

Women deserve to feel heard — not dismissed. 🤍

POV: You’re a functional medicine NP and these are your real-life horror movies 👻

(1) “Your Labs Are Normal” …but you feel exhausted, inflamed, anxious, and not like yourself.

(2) “Ferritin of 12” …being told it’s “fine” while your hair is falling out and you can’t build muscle.

(3) “It’s Just Stress” …but no one checks your cortisol, nervous system, or root cause.

(4) “There’s Nothing Wrong With Your Gut” …“just take Gas-X for the bloating” or “try a PPI and see” while you’re dealing with daily bloating, food sensitivities, and inflammation.

(5) “That’s Just Aging” …when your body is actually asking for support, not dismissal.

The scariest part? Most of these are things patients hear every single day.

At Solara, I don’t stop at “normal.” I look deeper. I ask why. I connect the dots.

Because feeling off in your body isn’t something you just have to live with.

✨ Fatigue
✨ Hormone imbalance
✨ Gut issues
✨ Brain fog

These aren’t random — they’re signals.

And when you understand them, everything changes.

If you’ve ever been told “everything looks fine” but you know something isn’t… you’re exactly who I created this for.

Eating with the seasons isn’t just a trend—it’s one of the simplest ways to support your metabolism, hormones, and gut health naturally 🌿

May in Florida brings some of the most hydrating, antioxidant-rich, and nutrient-dense foods of the year—exactly what your body needs as temperatures rise and inflammation tends to creep up.

Think:
✨ Watermelon + cucumber → hydration + skin support
✨ Berries → brain + anti-inflammatory power
✨ Avocado → hormone + blood sugar balance
✨ Mango + peaches → digestive enzymes + immune support

When you eat what’s in season, you’re getting foods at their peak nutrient density, which means better energy, better digestion, and better overall health—without overcomplicating it.

Save this for your next grocery run 🛒

Your body knows what it needs—sometimes it just looks like what’s growing right now 🌱

The Dirty Dozen & Clean 15 list is one of the simplest ways to reduce pesticide exposure without overcomplicating your nutrition.

Each year, the Environmental Working Group (EWG) reviews data on pesticide residues in produce and ranks items based on exposure levels.

The goal isn’t perfection — it’s prioritization.

If you’re looking to make small, meaningful changes:

• focus on buying organic for higher-residue items (Dirty Dozen)
• feel comfortable choosing conventional for lower-residue items (Clean 15)
• always wash your produce thoroughly

And most importantly — don’t let this create stress around food.

Eating a variety of fruits and vegetables is still one of the most important things you can do for your health.
