A little night run and a reminder that health is about so much more than what’s on our plates!✨

As dieticians, we believe that physical and mental well-being go hand in hand. With October being Mental Health Awareness Month, we want to highlight the importance of finding balance in how we eat, move and care for ourselves. 🫶🏻

A healthy relationship with food means nourishing our bodies without guilt, enjoying the foods we love, and remembering that exercise is something we do for enjoyment - not to compensate for what we’ve eaten.

For us, this night run was about movement, good company and having fun! And that’s our approach to nutrition too: less pressure, fewer rigid rules and bringing balance back.

When we talk about healthy eating, the conversation usually focuses on what we’re putting on our plates.

But how often do we consider how we actually feel about food?

Do you feel guilty after eating something you enjoy? Do you find yourself constantly thinking about what you should or shouldn’t eat? Or feel anxious when your usual eating routine changes?

A healthy relationship with food isn’t about having the perfect diet. It’s about finding a way of eating that supports your physical health without negatively affecting your mental well-being.

This Mental Health Awareness Month, we’re reminding you that looking after your health involves more than what you put on your plate. It also means making room for flexibility, enjoyment and peace of mind.

A healthy relationship with food might look like:

🥗 Choosing nutritious foods because they make you feel good, not because you feel obligated to.

🍕 Enjoying pizza with friends without feeling guilty afterwards.

🍫 Eating chocolate because you feel like it, without promising yourself you’ll “make up for it” tomorrow.

🍽️ Recognising when you’re hungry and allowing yourself to eat, even when it isn’t your usual mealtime.

💚 Understanding that one meal, one snack or one indulgent weekend doesn’t define your overall health.

Of course, nutrition matters. But so do flexibility, enjoyment, social connections and your mental well-being.

At Midline Dieticians, Bringing Balance Back means helping you find a way of eating that nourishes your body while allowing you to enjoy food without unnecessary guilt, stress or restriction.

LEFTOVER VEGGIE BREAKFAST MUFFINS 🥦🧀

A simple way to turn last night’s leftover vegetables into a quick, nutritious breakfast!

These savoury muffins are easy to make, packed with protein and perfect for busy mornings or lunchboxes.

Ingredients:

* 1 cup cooked broccoli and cauliflower, chopped
* 3 eggs
* ½ cup grated low-fat cheese
* ½ cup milk
* Salt and pepper to taste

Method:

1. Preheat your oven to 180°C.
2. Lightly grease a muffin tray.
3. Whisk together the eggs, milk, salt and pepper.
4. Stir in the chopped vegetables and grated cheese.
5. Divide the mixture evenly between the muffin cups.
6. Bake for approximately 20–25 minutes, or until set and lightly golden.

A little meal prep goes a long way!

Make a batch ahead of time and keep them in the fridge for an easy breakfast or snack.

Less food waste, minimal effort and a nutritious start to the day.

At the beginning of the year, I wrote three goals on a piece of paper: World Endo, Crit Care and PhD.

I’m not really a vision-board person, but I kept that note on my desk and looked at it every morning. It helped me keep sight of what I wanted to achieve while getting on with the work needed to get there.

Now, as we approach the end of the year, I’m taking a moment to appreciate how much has happened since I wrote those words.

I attended the Critical Care Congress and was honoured to receive SASPEN’s Arina Prins Award for the best clinical nutrition publication in a national journal. I also submitted my research to the World Congress of GI Endoscopy and had the opportunity to share it through a poster presentation.

My PhD submission is next, at the end of November. There’s still work to do, but being this close to submitting is something I’m incredibly proud of.

These milestones mean a great deal to me, and I’m grateful to everyone who has supported me along the way. For now, that little note is staying in my desk as I work towards the final goal on the list ✨

There’s something special about the traditions, stories and memories that remind us where we come from and what home means to us.

Today we celebrate everything that makes us uniquely and proudly South African.

What a special weekend at the Critical Care Congress. ❤️

I am incredibly honoured to have received the SASPEN Arina Prins Award for Best Publication for Clinical Nutrition in a National Jounal.

This award is particularly meaningful to me because clinical nutrition has been such an important part of my career. Research has allowed me to combine my passion for patient care with my love of learning, and to contribute, in a small way, to advancing nutrition practice in South Africa.

Behind every publication is a team of people who make the work possible - colleagues, mentors, supervisors, collaborators, patients and, of course, my family. I am so grateful to everyone who has supported me along the way.

Receiving an award named in honour of Arina Prins, a pioneer and respected figure in South African dietetics and nutrition, makes this recognition even more special.

A very grateful dietitian, researcher and lifelong learner. ✨

Thank you, SASPEN, for this incredible honour.

We absolutely want children eating nutritious foods. Fruit, vegetables, whole grains, protein and other nutrient-dense foods should make up the majority of what they eat 🍎 🥕 🥛

But a healthy relationship with food also means learning that a biscuit is just a biscuit 🍪 It doesn’t need to be earned by eating broccoli, and eating it doesn’t make a child “good” or “bad.”

The goal is balance, variety and moderation - not unlimited access to less nutritious foods, but also not making them so restricted or exciting that children feel they need to overeat them whenever they get the chance. ✨
