It’s National Arthritis Awareness Week in South Africa 🇿🇦

This week, we’re raising awareness about arthritis affecting the hips and knees and the impact it can have on everyday life.

Arthritis can cause inflammation and changes within a joint, leading to symptoms such as:

• Persistent joint pain or swelling
• Stiffness and reduced movement
• Difficulty walking or performing everyday activities
• Pain that may continue even when resting

The right treatment depends on the underlying cause and how the condition is affecting you. Treatment may include medication, physiotherapy, injections or surgery, including joint replacement where appropriate.

If ongoing hip or knee pain is affecting your movement or quality of life, early assessment can help you understand your condition and treatment options.

A damaged ACL does not mean every person will experience the same problems.

Some people may still manage everyday activities without major instability.

Others may notice their knee giving way when they turn, change direction, jump or take part in sport.

That difference matters.

An ACL injury needs to be considered in the context of the individual patient, their activity level and what they want their knee to be able to do.

The question is not simply whether the ACL is damaged.

It is how that damage is affecting the knee.

A fracture can heal, but the joint does not always return to exactly how it was before the injury.

Depending on the injury, there can be stiffness, changes in movement, instability or damage to the joint surface.

This is why treating an orthopaedic injury is about more than simply waiting for the bone to heal.

The bigger goal is restoring as much function as possible.

If you have ongoing pain, stiffness or difficulty using a joint after an injury, it is worth having it assessed.

Choosing a joint implant is about more than choosing from a list.

When planning a joint replacement, your surgeon considers several factors to determine what may be appropriate for you. These can include your anatomy, age, activity level, bone quality, and the type of joint replacement required.

The implant is only one part of the bigger treatment plan. Careful planning helps your surgeon consider the individual needs of each patient and select an appropriate implant and surgical approach.

Because every patient is different, planning matters.

Could damaged cartilage one day repair itself?

Cartilage is very different from bone. When it is damaged, it has a limited ability to repair itself, which is why researchers continue to explore new ways of understanding and treating cartilage damage.

Some emerging approaches have shown promising early findings, including treatments that aim to help the body repair or regenerate damaged cartilage more effectively.

However, promising research does not mean a new treatment is already available. These approaches are still being studied, and further research is needed to understand how they could eventually benefit patients.

For orthopaedics, this raises an exciting question: could future treatments help repair damaged cartilage and potentially delay or prevent the need for joint replacement in some patients?

At CTS Joints, staying informed about developments in orthopaedic research is part of understanding where the future of joint care may be heading.

What makes a joint replacement safe?

Patient safety starts with careful planning at every stage of the treatment journey.

Several factors play an important role, including:

• An experienced orthopaedic surgeon
• Careful patient assessment and selection
• Detailed surgical planning
• A sterile operating theatre and appropriate infection-control measures
• The right implant for the individual patient
• Appropriate post-operative care and follow-up

At CTS Joints, every part of the process matters, from the initial assessment and surgical planning to the procedure itself and the care that follows.

For World Patient Safety Day, we recognise the importance of a thorough, considered approach to joint replacement and keeping patient safety at the centre of care.

What does robotic technology actually do during a knee replacement?

Before the operation begins, the technology can help create a detailed picture of the patient's knee and assist the surgeon with planning the procedure.

The system can help the surgeon assess the anatomy, plan implant positioning and make adjustments based on the individual patient's knee.

But the technology does not replace the surgeon.

It is a tool that supports the surgeon's planning and decision-making, while the surgeon remains responsible for the procedure and the final decisions.

At CTS Joints, modern technology is used alongside specialist expertise to help plan treatment around the individual patient.

An ACL tear does not automatically mean that every patient needs surgery.

The right treatment depends on the person and what they need their knee to do.

Someone who mainly walks and does everyday activities may have different treatment needs from someone who plays football, rugby or another sport that involves sudden changes in direction.

Other factors also matter, including knee instability and whether there are additional injuries inside the knee.

So the question is not simply:

“Is the ACL torn?”

It is:

“What does this injury mean for this particular patient?”

That is where a proper assessment matters.

How long should a hip replacement last?

It is a question many patients understandably have before surgery.

A 2026 study published in The Lancet looked at more than 1.9 million total hip replacements using clinical studies and national joint registry data. The researchers estimated that around 92% of modern hip replacements could still be functioning at 30 years. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/41763743/.

That does not mean every hip replacement will last 30 years. Age, activity, implant type and other individual factors can all influence the outcome. But the research gives us a much clearer picture of how long modern hip replacements can potentially last. Long-term expectations are an important part of the conversation before surgery.
