October is Mental Health Awareness Month. Here’s what you need to know

Mental Health Awareness Month is about bringing attention to mental health, reducing stigma, and encouraging people to take their mental wellbeing seriously, just as they would their physical health.

It generally focuses on:

🧠 Understanding mental health – recognising that mental health is part of overall health and can affect anyone.

💬 Starting conversations – making it easier for people to talk about how they’re feeling without shame or judgement.

🤝 Reducing stigma – challenging the idea that struggling with mental health is a weakness or something to hide.

👀 Recognising the signs – helping people notice when they or someone close to them may need support.

🫶 Encouraging support – reminding people that asking for help is okay and that professional support is available.

🌱 Looking after yourself – highlighting everyday things that support wellbeing, such as rest, connection, movement, boundaries and managing stress.

❤️ Supporting others – encouraging us to check in with friends, family and colleagues rather than assuming they’re okay.

So this month, maybe check in on your people. Ask how they’re really doing. Make time for yourself too. And if you’re struggling, remember that asking for help doesn’t mean you’re weak, it means you’re human.

Before you pay for braces, there are a few things you’ll want to know👀
What’s included?
Your treatment should cover more than just the braces themselves. Ask whether your consultation, X-rays, fitting, adjustment appointments and retainers are included in the price.

What could cost extra?
Ask upfront about things like replacement brackets, broken wires, lost retainers or missed appointments. It’s much nicer to know beforehand than to get a surprise bill later.

How long will it take?
You’ll usually get an estimated treatment time, but it’s not set in stone. Everyone’s teeth move differently, and your treatment can take longer if appointments or instructions aren’t followed.

What happens when the braces come off?
You’ll need retainers to help keep your teeth in their new positions. Ask what type you’ll get, whether they’re included in your treatment cost and how often you’ll need to wear them.

And the big one: what am I actually paying for?
Before you commit, make sure you understand the full cost from start to finish,not just the price of putting the braces on.

It’s easy to think you’re just paying for the brackets and wires, but there’s actually quite a bit that goes into the whole process.

Your consultation & assessment – This is where your dentist checks your teeth, your bite and what needs to be moved or corrected, and puts together your treatment plan.

X-rays – These let your dentist see what’s happening underneath the surface — like your tooth roots, jaw and how your teeth are sitting.

Fitting your braces – The brackets aren’t just stuck on wherever. They’re positioned carefully on your teeth to help guide them into the right positions.

Regular adjustments – Your teeth are constantly moving, so your braces need to be adjusted along the way to keep things moving in the right direction.

Monitoring – At each appointment, your dentist checks how things are progressing and if anything needs to be changed.

Retainers – And once your braces come off, you’re not quite done! Retainers help keep your teeth in their new positions while everything settles.

So you’re really paying for the whole treatment journey, not just what you can see on your teeth.

Which one costs more: Braces or Aligners?

The answer might not be what you think.

Our fixed braces are priced at R38,881 upfront, with payment plan options available that start at R1300 per month.

Clear aligners are priced according to the number of aligner sets your treatment requires. For instance:
12 sets - R24,464.56
18 sets - R43,471.82
28 sets - R55,847.08

In some cases, aligners can actually cost less than braces, but in a more complex case requiring more aligner sets, they can cost more. The best part is that we also have payment plan options for aligners.

Why the difference?

With braces, the treatment package covers the fixed braces and your unique treatment.

With aligners, you’re paying for a series of individually made aligners designed to progressively move your teeth, along with the digital treatment planning, refinements and other components included in your treatment package.

However, you don’t get to choose between braces and aligners based on price alone. Your teeth, bite, alignment and the amount of movement required all matter.

Before you get aligners, here’s what you need to know 👇

1. You’ll need to wear them consistently
Usually around 20–22 hours a day. Taking them out for too long can slow your progress.

2. You’ll need to brush before putting them back in
Take them out to eat and drink anything other than water. Brush and floss before putting them back in to avoid trapping food and bacteria against your teeth.

3. You’ll have regular check-ups
Your dentist will monitor how your teeth are moving and check for any other dental issues. You don’t just get your aligners and come back when you’re finished.

4. You’ll change aligners throughout treatment
You’ll move through different sets, usually every couple of weeks. A new set may feel tight at first as it gently moves your teeth into position.

5. There are upfront costs
An aligner consultation is R1,200, while a consultation with intra-oral and panoramic X-rays can start from R3,511. Your treatment cost depends on how many aligners you need, with payment plans available for different packages.

6. You need to be 18 years and above to get aligners.
