POV: “MY NECK STARTED HURTING FOR ABSOLUTELY NO REASON!”
Sound familiar?
You were just relaxing on the sofa, watching television, scrolling through your phone, answering a few messages and checking something on your laptop.
Nothing strenuous. No heavy lifting. No intense workout.
So why is your neck suddenly complaining?
Here is something interesting.
When we spend long periods looking down at our phones or leaning towards our screens, our head often moves forward relative to our shoulders.
This is commonly called forward head posture.
Our neck muscles work to support and move our head, and staying in one position for extended periods can contribute to muscle fatigue, stiffness and discomfort.
But here is where it gets interesting.
YOUR POSTURE IS ONLY PART OF THE STORY.
There is no single perfect posture, and looking down at your phone does not automatically cause neck pain.
Movement habits, stress, sleep, physical capacity and the way our nervous system processes sensory information can all influence how we experience discomfort.
The nervous system is constantly receiving information from our muscles, joints and environment.
And the body responds accordingly.
SO WHAT CAN YOU DO?
Try changing positions regularly, moving your neck and shoulders comfortably, adjusting your screen height and giving yourself opportunities to move throughout the day.
Sometimes, a little movement makes a meaningful difference.
AND FOR THE PRACTITIONERS READING THIS…
What if understanding neck discomfort involved more than simply working on tight muscles?
At B3 Academy | Brain. Body. Balance., we explore the connection between sensory input, nervous system responses, fascia and muscle activation.
Our B3 Activation Course introduces practical assessment and hands-on techniques to help practitioners explore a more integrated approach to working with the body.
ASSESS. UNDERSTAND. RESPOND.
