The iThemba Laboratory for Accelerator-Based Sciences is a multi-disciplinary research facility that is based on the development, operation and use of particle accelerators & related research equipment. The facilities provide opportunities for modern research, advanced education, the treatment of cancers and the production of unique radioisotopes. Our company's primary focus is on providing scientifically and medically useful radiation through the acceleration of charged particles using the Separated Sector Cyclotron, the Van der Graaff Accelerator and other appropriate technologies. iThemba LABS aims to be the primary centre of expertise in radiation medicine and nuclear science and technologies to advance the knowledge and health of the people of Africa.

Friday, 6 November, is observed as Malaria Day. Tune in on Monday, 9 November at 15h00, for a conversation with Prof Tiaan de Jager on Radio Eersteriver (www.radioeersteriver.co.za). Prof Tiaan is the founding director of the Institute for Sustainable Malaria Control at the University of Pretoria (UP ISMC) and a professor of Environmental Health.

The International School on Nuclear Methods and Applied Research (NUMAR) is being hosted at the Ocean Breeze Hotel in Strand from 26 - 30 October. Dr Elena Nasonova, an invited speaker, introduced participants to radiation Cytogenetics, which is the study of how ionizing radiation damages cell chromosomes. Did you know that the damage, referred to as chromosome abberations, serve as the most sensitive marker for radiation exposure and biomarker for cancer risk? What an amazing privilege to listen to John Martinis giving his lecture titled, "From prehistoric qubits to building a useful quantum computer." The lecture was presented at the opening of Nobel in Africa that is hosted by STIAS in Stellenbosch.
