MEET YOUR NEPHROLOGIST | DR JULIET MAME MENSAH

At Icon Renal Care, we believe that exceptional kidney care starts with clinical expertise, compassion and a commitment to every patient.

Meet Dr Juliet Mame Mensah, a Specialist Physician and Nephrologist with extensive experience in internal medicine and a special interest in renal care.

Dr Mensah obtained her medical degree from the University of the Witwatersrand in 2007 and completed her specialist training in Internal Medicine at Steve Biko Academic Hospital, in association with the University of Pretoria. She holds a Certificate in Nephrology and is a Fellow in Renal Replacement Therapy through the World Kidney Academy, where she also serves as its ambassador to South Africa.

Her journey into nephrology was deeply personal, inspired by the loss of her father to renal disease. Today, this personal connection continues to shape her dedication to the field of kidney care.

Meet your nephrologist: Dr Leigh Johannes

At Icon Renal Care, we believe that understanding your kidney health is an important part of your care journey.

Dr Leigh Johannes is a Specialist Physician and Nephrologist with a passion for kidney health, early intervention and preventative medicine. She completed her medical degree at Stellenbosch University, followed by specialisation in Internal Medicine at the University of the Witwatersrand and further training in Nephrology.

Dr Johannes' commitment to patient education is also at the heart of Real Talk Renal, our new video series designed to make kidney health easier to understand. Through honest, informative conversations, she will answer common questions, address misconceptions and share insights to help patients feel more informed and confident about their care.

National Nutrition Week: Eat the Rainbow!

One of our dietitians' top tips for people living with kidney disease, including those receiving dialysis, is to include a variety of vegetables in their meals, where appropriate.

Vegetables provide essential vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and fibre, which can support overall health and help relieve constipation. For people on dialysis, an appropriate vegetable intake may also help manage metabolic acidosis.

Simple ways to eat more vegetables:

• Add vegetables to your breakfast omelette or sandwich.
• Include salads or vegetable sides with lunch.
• Choose vegetable-based snacks, such as carrot sticks with hummus, where suitable.

Remember: Kidney-friendly diets are individual. Your potassium levels, kidney function and treatment plan may affect which vegetables and portion sizes are right for you. Always follow your dietitian’s advice.
