For Dr William Mapham, that purpose grew from an experience he never forgot.

As a junior doctor, he referred a patient with a serious eye condition to a specialist hospital. When they met again seven years later, the patient had never reached the hospital and had lost sight in that eye.

Dr Mapham realised he had had the medication the patient needed at their first consultation. Specialist advice could have made the difference.

We’re proud to share that Dr William Mapham, Founder of Vula Medical, has been selected for the 2026 cohort 🌍

William joins 15 entrepreneurs from across Africa, Asia and Latin America working on locally led solutions to some of the world’s most pressing health, hygiene and sanitation challenges.

With this new cohort, Reckitt Catalyst’s global community now includes 100 social innovators, with the programme aiming to help improve access to health and hygiene for five million people by 2030.

Delivered in partnership with Reckitt , Yunus Social Innovation, Health Innovation Exchange - HIEx and Acumen America, the programme brings together expertise, mentorship and partnerships to help proven local solutions scale their impact.

For Vula, this is an exciting opportunity to learn from fellow innovators, connect with a global community and continue finding ways to strengthen access to healthcare for the communities that need it most.

It was an inspiring few days last week at the Africa HealthTech Summit, AHTS in Kigali, Rwanda 🤝

We connected with health leaders, innovators and policymakers from across Africa and beyond, demonstrated Vula live, and shared how the platform helps connect health workers with specialists.

We also came away inspired by the innovation happening across the continent, with new ideas, new connections and lots of energy for what comes next.

Dr William Mapham will join the CEO Roundtable tomorrow to explore practical pathways for mobilising capital, strengthening public-private partnerships and scaling intelligent technologies to transform Africa’s health systems.

South African startup Vula Mobile, a medical referral app and online platform which hosts a network of health professionals, has passed the three million patient referral mark.
