Additionally, while we strive to provide effective support, individual results may vary based on factors such as learning preferences and commitment to the program. We encourage parents and learners to engage with our team openly and communicate any concerns or questions they may have throughout their journey with EduHelp.

Today was a first for me, my first time hosting my own radio show!

Making Life Work with Melissa van Hal is now underway, and I have to admit, I was nervous!

It is one thing to work with learning, education and wellness every day, and quite another to take that work into a radio studio and share it with a different audience. There is the preparation, the thinking about what you want to say, and then the moment when you actually have to do it.

I often talk about learning as something that extends well beyond formal education. It is part of how we develop, how we navigate unfamiliar situations, and how we discover what we are capable of. But it is one thing to talk about these things and another to experience them yourself!

Today reminded me that we don't have to wait until we feel completely comfortable to try something new. Sometimes, we have to take the step, work through the nerves and allow ourselves to learn along the way.

A sincere thank you to AfriKaap Radio for the opportunity to do something new and to share my work through radio. A special thank you to Renée for being there, guiding me through the process and helping me navigate this new experience. I really appreciated having that support as I found my feet.

This was the first of five episodes in my Educational Series, and I am looking forward to the remaining four!

UPSKILL STUDIO | GUEST TALKS

Supporting Physical and Mental Wellbeing in a Screen-Based World

Screens are now part of everyday life — from the classroom to the workplace. But what does this mean for how we move, work, learn and regulate?

For our October Upskill Studio Guest Talk, Susanna Albertyn, Physiotherapist, and Cerise Rabie, Educational Psychologist, will explore the physical and psychological considerations of growing up and working in an increasingly screen-based world.

The discussion will include:
* Posture and ergonomics
* Screen habits
* Movement and regulation
* Mental wellbeing
* Considerations from school through to work

Join us to consider these issues from both physical and psychological perspectives.

A week of conversations about learning, parenting and making life work.

This coming week brings a few opportunities to talk about topics close to my heart: how we learn, how we support children through challenging periods, and how we can better understand the factors that influence our everyday functioning.

Here is where you can join me!

MONDAY, 26 OCTOBER | 10:00–12:00
📻 Making Life Work with Melissa van Hal – Afrikaap Radio

The first of a five-part educational series on exams, starting with Getting Ready for Exams: More Than Just Studying.

Preparing for exams involves more than knowing the work. We'll explore the broader considerations that influence preparation and how we can approach the exam period more holistically.

Listen live: https://afrikaap.co.za/listen-live/

TUESDAY, 27 OCTOBER | 19:00–20:00
🌱 Upskill Parenting: Practical Ways to Support Your Child's Exam Preparation

Brought to you by Presheka B Wellness Counsellor and Holistic Awareness.

This online session, Parenting with Intention, focuses on practical ways parents can support their children during the exam period.

Our guest speaker, Loudine Heunis, explores the study space, what happens during exams, nutrition, emotional support and discussing reports. The aim is to consider the practical skills and everyday approaches that can help parents support their children through this demanding time.

The introductory session is free; fees apply from 2027.

TUESDAY, 27 OCTOBER | 07:00 South African time
🎙️ Tuesday Mix and Mingle – Afrikaap Radio

I'll also be joining Wayne Southgate (WayneNZ) as a special guest on Afrikaap Radio, representing EduHelp and the work I do around learning and wellness.

Listen live: https://afrikaap.co.za/listen-live/

For me, these conversations connect through a common thread: people do not function in isolation, and learning does not happen in isolation either.

How we learn, manage demands, communicate, regulate ourselves and navigate everyday life is influenced by multiple, interacting factors. Looking at these connections can help us ask better questions and consider more appropriate ways of providing support.

I'm looking forward to these conversations and to sharing ideas, practical perspectives and opportunities for learning with different audiences.

If one of these topics speaks to your work or your family, I hope you'll join us!

Introducing Upskill Parenting | Parenting with Intention

Parenting a child through the examination years involves more than reminding them to study. It also means understanding the demands they face and recognising the many factors that can influence their preparation, performance and wellbeing.

We’re pleased to introduce Upskill Parenting, a new branch of our Professional Upskill Studio that extends our educational and wellness conversations to parents.

Our first session, Practical Ways to Support Your Child’s Exam Preparation, will explore practical aspects of supporting children through the examination period, including:

- Creating a supportive study space
- Supporting children during examinations
- Nutrition and its role in everyday functioning
- Emotional support during periods of academic demand
- Understanding and discussing professional reports

Loudine Heunis, Specialist Wellness Counsellor, will present the session, drawing on her academic background, teaching experience, and Supportive and Integrative Wellness (SIW) approach.

The aim is to provide parents with practical information and perspectives they can consider and apply when supporting their children.

Session details

Date: 27 October 2026
Time: 19:00–20:00

I’m pleased to share that I’ll be presenting a five-part educational series on Afrikaap Radio, exploring learning, examination readiness, cognitive functioning and the practical application of information.

The series looks beyond studying alone to consider the wider factors that influence how learners prepare, manage demands, demonstrate their knowledge and recover during the examination period.

The Five-Part Series

1. Getting Ready for Exams: More Than Just Studying
Exploring cognitive, emotional, physical and practical readiness for examinations.

2. When Your Brain Has Had Enough: Understanding Cognitive Overload
Understanding how competing demands and cognitive overload can affect learning, concentration and examination performance.

3. In the Exam Room: What You Do Matters Too
Considering how learners interpret questions, manage examination demands and demonstrate what they know.

4. After the Exam: Coming Down, Recovering and Moving Forward
Exploring decompression, recovery and reflection during and after the examination period.

5. Understanding Reports: Turning Information into Action
Developing a more informed and proactive approach to understanding professional reports and using recommendations constructively.

My aim is to share practical, educational information that helps parents, learners and educators better understand the processes involved in learning, functioning and academic performance.

I am particularly grateful to Afrikaap Radio for the opportunity to collaborate on this series and for providing a platform to share my knowledge and professional experience with a wider audience. I value the opportunity to contribute to conversations that can help people better understand learning and apply that understanding in meaningful, practical ways. I look forward to sharing this series with you.

12/10/2026

I never set out to build a business. I think I kept noticing people who needed help, and kept trying to understand what kind of help would actually make a difference. At 16, I worked as a front-shop assistant in a pharmacy, and in 2004, while completing my Masters, I began tutoring and working with students experiencing disabilities and learning barriers. Something changed for me. I became fascinated by how we learn, rather than what we learn. I realised what I was doing wasn't really tutoring. It was about skills, understanding the learner and making difficult things accessible.

That is why I created EduHelp.

But before I started EduHelp in 2009, I taught scuba diving in 2006 and 2007, which reinforced something I loved: taking difficult, technical, or practical concepts and finding ways to make them accessible. Teaching 12 metres underwater certainly taught me that context matters! Nature, adventure and challenge have always been part of who I am. I like figuring things out, exploring and finding another way when the first way doesn't work. That has shaped both my methodology and my life.

I am grateful to the schools that allowed me to learn alongside learners, families and educators, and to an exceptional remedial therapist who significantly influenced my understanding of learning support. My qualifications span education, psychology, disability studies, and wellness. But I know something important: My qualifications are part of my story. They are not my whole story. They represent training and professional development, but they don't capture the person behind them: my experiences, challenges, curiosity, interests, mistakes, adventures and the people who have shaped me. I tend to mention my qualifications when my knowledge or experience is questioned, rather than because they define me.

Over 17 years, EduHelp has evolved from learning support into functional development, educational wellness, teacher wellness, professional development, resources and broader integrative approaches to learning and well-being. It hasn't always been easy. My views don't always fit comfortably within established thinking, and challenging ideas has sometimes created disagreement. Yet I value those who have challenged me: some showed me where I needed to change; others where I needed to stand my ground.

What has remained constant? Grit. Curiosity. Methodology. And a willingness to take on the next challenge. I am deeply grateful to the schools, educators, professionals, families, learners and collaborators who have shaped this journey, particularly Loudine Heunis, Lisa Theunissen, Robyn Moses (nee Hawes), Presheka Budhrani, Jeanne Kruger and Lehandra Riley.

17 years is worth celebrating. People see the success. They don't always see the challenges it took to get there, the amount of time, effort, failures and dedication it took. I see the next mountain. The next challenge: to learn, adapt, question and grow. I cannot wait!

Does your child have a study timetable… but struggle to follow it?

Creating a revision schedule is not about filling in blocks of time. Learners need to understand their available time, harmonise schoolwork with other demands, know where and how to focus their attention, and build in enough flexibility to keep going when things don’t go according to plan.

The Study and Revision: Schedules that Work micro-course takes learners through a practical process for creating a study and revision schedule that works for them. If your child is struggling to organise their study time, this may be a useful place to start.
