Happy World Occupational Therapy Day! 💚

To celebrate, we asked our team to share what they love and admire about the colleagues they work alongside every day. Their words capture the heart, knowledge, humour and care that Anita, Gaby, Renandi and Kyla each bring to our practice.

Swipe through to meet the people behind the care. We’re so grateful to learn from, support and laugh with one another. 🌿

💭Renandi’s Therapist Thought for the month 💭

“Sometimes, it’s not really about the flowers.”

A table covered in flowers might look like a simple spring activity.

But as an Occupational Therapist, I see so much more.

I see hands reaching, grasping, cutting and arranging.
I see choices being made.
I see concentration, problem-solving and creativity.
I see people sharing ideas, helping one another and enjoying a moment together.

I see someone participating in something meaningful, even if they need a little assistance to do so.

And perhaps most importantly, I see people being given the opportunity to participate rather than having things done for them.

Occupational Therapy is often about finding those little moments where someone can experience purpose, connection and independence again.

Because sometimes a flower arrangement isn’t just a flower arrangement.

Sometimes it’s a reminder that there is still so much you can do, create, contribute and enjoy. 🌸

🧠 Sometimes the simplest assessment tells us so much.

Here we are completing a basic visual neglect screening just 5 days after a stroke. The patient is asked to mark/cross out all the lines she can see across the page.

Following a left-hemisphere stroke, she presented with right-sided hemiplegia as well as reduced awareness of information on the right side. A task like this can help us identify patterns of inattention and guide further assessment and treatment.

The early days after stroke matter. As neuro OTs working in the acute hospital setting, our intervention goes far beyond simply getting someone “up and moving.” We are already considering body awareness and body scheme, sensory and perceptual processing, postural control, upper-limb management, attention to the affected side, positioning, and how all of these influence function.

This is where skilled neurological rehabilitation can make such a difference. Early, appropriate therapeutic handling, positioning and task-specific input can help create the best possible conditions for recovery while reducing the development of unhelpful compensatory strategies and secondary complications.

NDT/Bobath training has strongly influenced the way we assess and treat people after stroke—particularly how we consider the whole person, their alignment, sensory information, movement strategies and participation in meaningful activity from the very beginning.

Acute care may only be the first few days of a much longer rehabilitation journey, but what we do during those days matters. 💚

Arthritis can make the little things feel like big things 💚

Opening a jar. Fastening a button. Preparing a meal. Typing at work. Picking up a grandchild. Enjoying a favourite hobby.

For someone living with arthritis, these everyday activities can become painful, tiring or frustrating.

Occupational Therapy looks beyond the affected joint to something bigger: the life you want to keep living.

We help people find practical ways to adapt, manage and continue participating in the activities that are meaningful to them.

This World Arthritis Day, 12 October 2026, we’re reminded that independence isn’t only about what your body can do — it’s about finding ways to keep doing what matters. 🌿

💭Gaby’s Therapist Thought for the month💭

People sometimes assume that once you finish studying and start working, the learning stops. In this field, that couldn’t be further from the truth! I’ve always loved learning. I’m naturally curious, academically driven, and probably a little too excited by a new textbook or a topic I haven’t come across before!

One thing I’ve also learnt throughout my journey as an OT is that you can’t know everything — and that’s okay. If I’m asked something and I don’t know the answer, I’m more than happy to say, “I don’t know… but I’ll find out.” 🔎

I think that’s one of the things I love most about working in this field: there is always something new to learn. New research, new approaches, new perspectives, and most importantly, new things to learn from the people we work with. There’s no ceiling on what I can learn, no point where I’ll have “arrived.” Just more to understand, more ways to grow, and a desk that will probably always have one too many books open on it.

Participation Matters—and helping people take part in everyday life takes a team. 💚

This OT Week, we loved celebrating alongside our physiotherapy, speech therapy, social work and dietetics colleagues, doctors and hospital staff. Thank you for joining us, and for the care and collaboration you bring to our patients every day.

Happy Occupational Therapy Week from the Van der Wath OT team! 🌿

💚 OT WEEK — DAY 4 | HERITAGE DAY 🇿🇦

Our heritage shapes our occupations. 🌿

The food we prepare, the music we enjoy, the traditions we continue, the people we spend time with and the roles we hold in our families and communities all form part of who we are.

As Occupational Therapists, we know that meaningful occupation is personal. Our culture, heritage and life experiences influence the things we need, want and love to do.

On Day 4 of OT Week, we celebrate the diverse occupations, traditions and connections that give our lives meaning, identity and belonging.

🎉 Happy Birthday, Anita! 💚

There’s something extra special about sharing her birthday with Occupational Therapy Week — celebrating Anita and the profession she has poured so much of her heart into! 💚

Today’s team meeting came with some birthday spoils — her favourite vida coffee ☕, a homemade cake baked by Gaby 🎂 and beautiful proteas! 🌸

A special day to celebrate our practice owner, OT, team leader and the lady who keeps the show running behind the scenes! 😄

Here’s to another year of growing, leading, doing what you love and making a difference through OT.

Happy Birthday, Anita! 🥂🎈 And Happy OT Week! 💚
