A**l Fistula: How Is It Treated?

An a**l fistula is a small tunnel that forms between the inside of the a**s and the skin around it. Treatment depends on the position of the tunnel and how much of the muscles that control bowel movements are involved.

One common treatment is called laying open the tract. In simple terms, the surgeon opens the tunnel to allow it to heal properly. If the fistula involves more of the muscles, a seton — a flexible thread or band placed through the tunnel — may be used to help manage the fistula while protecting those muscles.

The aim is to treat the fistula while preserving normal bowel control. The most suitable approach depends on each patient’s condition and needs.

Just Pop It at Home? Think Again.

A peria**l abscess is not just a pimple that you can squeeze and expect to heal. It is a deeper infection near the a**s, and trying to pop it at home can cause further complications.

Squeezing it may spread the infection into surrounding tissues, which is why proper medical assessment and treatment are important. Treatment usually involves incision and drainage, with antibiotics used as part of the overall management.

If you notice a painful swelling around your a**s, please don’t try to drain it yourself. Seek medical attention promptly so the infection can be properly assessed and treated.

Have you ever mistaken a peria**l abscess for an ordinary pimple?

Signs of an A**l Fistula.

An a**l fistula is a small tunnel that forms between the inside of the a**l ca**l and the skin around the a**s. It can develop following an infection or an abscess that has not healed properly.

Some signs to look out for include persistent discharge that stains your underwear, an abscess that keeps coming back, a small opening or wound around the a**s that does not heal and irritation or pain in the area.

These symptoms should not be ignored, especially if they keep returning. A proper medical assessment can help establish the cause and determine the appropriate treatment.

Had you heard of an a**l fistula before? Let me know in the comments.

I spend most of my time talking about health and surgery, so apparently, it was time to show a different side of me. 😂

One fun video was the assignment. A few dance moves later, here we are. 😭😂

Should I do more of these, or should I leave the dancing to the professionals?

Quick-fire: Yes or No? Peria**l Abscess

A peria**l abscess is a collection of pus caused by an infection near the a**s. It can cause pain, swelling and discomfort.

Knowing the facts can help you recognise when medical attention is needed.

A peria**l abscess can cause fever, may return after treatment and often requires more than antibiotics alone. Diabetes can increase the risk, but it is not simply caused by poor hygiene.

If you have a painful lump with fever or spreading redness, seek medical attention the same day.

How many of these questions would you have answered correctly?

Gynecomastia is often misunderstood, and there are quite a few myths around it.

It is not simply excess fat, it does not only affect older or overweight men and surgery is not automatically the answer. Exercise may help in some cases, but it does not get rid of true gynecomastia in every situation.

The important thing is understanding what is actually causing the breast enlargement before deciding what needs to be done.

Which gynecomastia myth had you believed before?

Breast changes: know your red flags.

Not every breast change means cancer, but some changes should not be ignored.

Look out for:

A new lump or swelling in the breast or armpit
A change in the size or shape of the breast
Changes to the skin, such as dimpling or unusual thickening
Changes to the ni**le, including a new inversion or unusual discharge
Persistent pain or a change that is new for you

If you notice any of these changes, getting them checked is important. Early assessment can help identify what is causing the change.

Have you noticed a breast change you were unsure about? Let me know what you’d like me to explain next.

When it comes to pilonidal sinus, these signs are worth paying attention to.

A pilonidal sinus can develop as a small opening in the skin, usually near the top of the buttocks. It may cause pain, swelling or discharge, especially when it becomes infected.

It’s easy to mistake it for a simple boil, but if the problem keeps coming back, it’s worth getting it properly assessed.

From patients, colleagues, these words mean a lot.

Being trusted to care for someone is one thing. Knowing that the people you work with also value your approach, your work and the way you relate with others is something I appreciate deeply.

Thank you to everyone who has shared a kind word, whether as a patient, colleague or part of the team.

What makes a good doctor or surgeon stand out to you?

Sometimes, the smallest details matter.

One of the comments shared an experience about the care taken with the placement of a surgical incision. These are the kinds of details that may seem small, but they can matter to a patient.

Every procedure comes with its own considerations, and I always aim to approach each patient as an individual.

What would you want your surgeon to consider beyond the procedure itself?
