🦵💚 COLLAGEN FOR JOINTS: IS IT WORTH TAKING?

Can collagen really help with aching knees, stiff joints or osteoarthritis? And can it actually rebuild worn cartilage? 🤔

🔬 The good news? Research suggests collagen may help reduce joint pain and improve physical function, particularly in people with knee osteoarthritis.

A 2025 review of 11 clinical trials involving 870 participants found improvements in both pain and function. 🙌

BUT… not all collagen supplements are the same!

🥄 Hydrolysed collagen peptides: Usually taken as a powder, around 3–10 g daily.

💊 Undenatured Type II collagen: A different formulation, with research supporting certain standardised products at around 40 mg daily.

Yes, that's GRAMS versus MILLIGRAMS — an important difference when choosing a supplement!

⏳ And patience matters! Most joint studies run for 12 weeks to 6 months, so don't expect overnight results.

⚠️ Now for the marketing myth…

Collagen may help your joints feel better, but that doesn't mean it's rebuilding cartilage.

There is currently insufficient evidence that collagen regenerates worn cartilage or reverses osteoarthritis.

🏋️‍♀️ And remember, the basics still matter most:

🚶‍♀️ Regular therapeutic exercise

⚖️ Healthy weight management where appropriate

🥗 Adequate protein and balanced nutrition

🚭 Avoiding smoking

💚 THE BOTTOM LINE

Collagen may be worth considering as an extra tool to support joint comfort and function — not a cure or replacement for proven treatments.

✨ Support your movement, but keep your expectations realistic!

What we eat plays a very important role in supporting our health, including our brains.

The brain is a very complex, but vital organ. There is unfortunately no quick fix for our brain health.

But combining a balanced diet, regular exercise, proper sleep, we can contribute to long term cognitive functioning.

🧴✨ COLLAGEN FOR SKIN: Does it actually work?

Can a daily scoop of collagen really give you younger-looking skin? The answer is… possibly a little — but keep your expectations realistic. 🔬

Research on hydrolysed collagen peptides suggests there may be modest improvements in:
💧 Skin hydration
✨ Skin elasticity
〰️ Wrinkle depth or volume

But these changes don’t happen overnight. Most studies assess results after around 8–12 weeks of consistent use. 📅

⚠️ Here’s the catch: the evidence is mixed. Many studies are small, results vary considerably, and concerns around study quality and industry funding mean the benefits may not be as convincing as collagen marketing suggests.

If you’d like to try it:
🥄 2.5–5 g hydrolysed collagen peptides daily
⏳ Trial it for 8–12 weeks
🔎 Then reassess whether you notice a worthwhile difference.

And remember: collagen is an optional extra, not the foundation of healthy skin.

🥗 Eat adequate protein
🍊 Include vitamin-C-rich foods
☀️ Protect your skin from excessive UV exposure
🚭 Avoid smoking

The bottom line?
Collagen may provide a little extra support for hydration and elasticity, but think possible benefit — not an anti-ageing miracle. 💚

🧬✨ THIS WEEK, WE’RE TALKING COLLAGEN!

Collagen supplements are everywhere — powders, drinks, gummies, beauty blends… but are they actually worth the hype? 🤔

This week at Pure Health Dieticians, we’re cutting through the marketing and looking at what the science actually says. 🔬💚

We’ll be unpacking:

🧬 The big picture — What is collagen, and what actually happens after you swallow it?

✨ Collagen for skin — Can it improve hydration, elasticity or wrinkles?

🦵 Collagen for joints — Can it help with joint pain and function, and can it really “rebuild cartilage”?

🥄 Choosing a supplement — What type, how much, and do you really need the expensive option?

Our goal? Real science. Realistic expectations. Practical advice. Because supplements can have a place — but more expensive doesn’t always mean more effective. 🌿

👉 Follow along this week as we unpack collagen, one topic at a time!
