🎀 BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH 🎀
Early detection can save lives.

October is a reminder to take a moment for your breast health. Breast cancer can affect women of all backgrounds, and knowing what is normal for your body can help you recognise changes early.

🔍 KNOW THE WARNING SIGNS

Speak to a healthcare professional if you notice:

• A new lump or thickening in the breast or armpit
• A change in the size or shape of the breast
• Skin dimpling, puckering or an “orange peel” appearance
• Changes to the ni**le, including inversion or unusual discharge
• Redness, swelling, scaling or changes in the skin
• Persistent pain in a specific area of the breast or armpit
• One breast becoming noticeably different from the other

⚠️ Remember: Not every breast lump is cancer — but every unusual change should be checked.

🎀 SCREENING MATTERS

Know your breasts and check them regularly for changes. A clinical breast examination should form part of your regular health checks.

CANSA currently recommends annual mammogram screening from age 40 for women without symptoms, with screening intervals changing from age 55. Women with significant risk factors or a close family history may need earlier or more frequent screening — speak to your healthcare professional about what is right for you.

💗 Don't wait for a lump. Don't ignore a change. Get checked.

🚩 KNOW THE WARNING SIGNS

Keep an eye out for changes such as:

🔸 Talking about feeling hopeless, worthless or like a burden
🔸 Saying things like “I can't do this anymore” or “Everyone would be better without me”
🔸 Suddenly withdrawing from family and friends
🔸 Losing interest in things they usually enjoy
🔸 Major changes in sleep, appetite or behaviour
🔸 Increased alcohol or drug use
🔸 Giving away important belongings or saying goodbye unexpectedly
🔸 Talking about death or su***de
🔸 Taking unusual risks or acting recklessly
🔸 A sudden change from extreme distress to unusual calmness

Don't ignore a change in someone you care about. ❤️

💬 WHAT SHOULD YOU DO?

If you're worried about someone, ASK.

You can simply say:

"I've noticed that you haven't been yourself lately. I'm worried about you. Are you thinking about su***de?"

Asking doesn't make things worse.
It opens the door to an honest conversation.

🤝 STAY with them if they aren't safe alone.
