One of the most useful things you can tell me is not simply, "My periods hurt."

Tell me what the pain makes you cancel. Tell me whether you can work through it. Tell me what medication you need.

Those details help us understand whether we're dealing with expected menstrual discomfort or something that needs investigation.

And yes - you can ask your gynae that. 🤍

As an obstetrician and gynaecologist, I see women through some of life's most beautiful moments, but also some of its most difficult.

Pregnancy loss, fertility struggles, motherhood, hormonal changes and the pressures of everyday life can all affect our emotional wellbeing.

This World Mental Health Day, I want to remind you that caring for your mental health is just as important as caring for your physical health.

There are appointments in obstetrics filled with excitement; and there are rooms where the future a family imagined suddenly changes.

Pregnancy and baby loss can be deeply personal, and grief does not follow a neat timeline. You do not have to minimise it because the pregnancy was early, because others did not meet your baby, or because time has passed.

This Baby Loss Awareness Week, I’m thinking of the mothers, fathers and families carrying those stories quietly.

Your baby mattered. Your experience mattered. And your grief deserves tenderness🌸

Please note that the practice will be closed from 25 September to 2 October while we relocate to our new permanent premises.

My South African heritage is about more than just the beautiful attire we wear. The colours, patterns and traditions are an expression of something much deeper — a culture rooted in community, connection and belonging.

This year, especially, the phrase “Motho ke motho ka batho” - (“I am because we are”)- has taken on a deeper meaning for me. I am reminded of one of the greatest gifts of my South African heritage: Ubuntu.

A reminder that community is built when we look beyond ourselves — when we share what we have, make space for one another, invest in others and lend a hand where we can.

I’m grateful for every opportunity to give back, serve my community and be part of something bigger than myself.

This is the heritage I was born into — and the legacy I want to carry forward. ❤️🇿🇦

🔈 FREEDOM IS FOR ALL — WOMEN INCLUDED.

Freedom to walk home. To take a solo run🏃🏾‍♀️ without feeling threatened. To live without constantly calculating the risk of violence.

Our daughters should not have to learn that freedom comes with conditions: Don’t go alone. Don’t wear that. Share your location. Call when you arrive.

We teach vigilance because reality demands it - but vigilance is never responsibility. Responsibility for violence ultimately belongs to the person who chooses to perpetrate it.

As we mourn the women whose lives have been lost in and around Kempton Park, my heart is with their families. They were never simply “bodies found.” They were daughters, mothers, sisters and friends. They had dreams, plans and people who loved them.

They were human beings. Their lives mattered.

As an Obgyn, I cannot speak about women’s health without speaking about women’s safety.

GBV is not a women’s issue to solve. It is a societal issue we must confront.

Freedom is for all.
Women included.

Walk into a pharmacy and there’s a supplement for almost everything - energy, hair, hormones, fertility, immunity, pregnancy, sleep… the list goes on😅

But before adding another bottle to your routine, ask why you’re taking it.
💊 Do I actually need it?
🔎 Am I already getting the same vitamins elsewhere?
💊 Could it interact with medication I’m taking?
🤰🏽 Am I trying to conceive or pregnant, and is it appropriate for me?

Two different-looking supplements can contain many of the same ingredients, and “natural” doesn’t automatically mean risk-free.

Supplements can be useful. More supplements aren’t necessarily more useful.

Your doctor or pharmacist can help you choose what actually makes sense for your health.

A fulfilling and inspiring time at IRCAD Africa in Kigali, Rwanda 🇷🇼 - learning, practising, sharpening my surgical skills and continuing to invest in becoming the surgeon I aspire to be.

There is something humbling about being a doctor and knowing that learning never really ends. As techniques evolve and medicine advances, so must we.

On International Gynaecological Awareness Day, this feels especially meaningful. Women deserve to feel informed and heard, but they also deserve doctors who remain committed to growing in the skills required to care for them.

I return home grateful for the knowledge, the experience and the people I had the privilege of learning alongside; and excited to keep becoming better for the women I serve.

This is a question many women ask with a lot of guilt attached to it.

If you consumed alcohol before discovering you were pregnant, tell your healthcare provider honestly what happened. There is no known safe amount of alcohol during pregnancy, so avoiding alcohol once pregnancy is known is recommended.

But fear and shame should never keep you away from antenatal care.

Bring the difficult questions too. That is what we are here for. 🌸
