Many strokes can be prevented, and the everyday choices we make really do add up. (But no, we're not asking you to run a marathon or give up the Sunday braai! 😉)

👉 Check out these four habits that help to lower your risk: get moving on most days, eat less salt and more fresh food, stop smoking and limit alcohol, and take your medication as prescribed.

If you're on chronic medication for blood pressure, diabetes or cholesterol, taking it exactly as prescribed is one of the most important things you can do. Skipping doses or running out between repeats can put you at risk without you even realising it.

Your pharmacist can help you stay on top of your repeats and answer any questions about your medication. You don't have to change everything at once – start with one small habit this week. 🧡

When someone you love is facing breast cancer, it can be hard to know what to say or do.

Often, the most helpful support is practical. Offer a lift to an appointment, cook a meal, help with the school run, collect their medication, or simply sit and listen. Being specific helps too: 'I'm bringing supper on Thursday' is so much easier to accept than 'Let me know if you need anything'.

And if you are the one going through treatment, please remember that it's okay to say yes when help is offered.

Quick question: when last did you do a breast self-check? 🤔 (No judgement – we know how long the to-do list is.) It takes about five minutes, once a month, and it's one of the simplest ways to get to know your body.

Swipe through for the three steps: look in the mirror for any changes in shape, size or skin, feel the whole breast using the flat pads of your fingers, and remember to check your armpits and up to your collarbone too. Choose a regular time each month – a few days after your period ends is ideal, or the same date every month if you no longer have periods – so that you can learn what's normal for you. 🫶

👉 Remember, a self-check doesn't replace a clinical breast exam or a mammogram. If you notice anything new or unusual, speak to your doctor or clinic sister. Save this post so you have it handy next month!

It's Global Handwashing Day! 👐🧼 Yes, there really is a day for everything – but this one has earned its spot on the calendar.

Washing your hands with soap and water for 20 seconds is still one of the simplest ways to stop germs from spreading through your home, school and workplace. It sounds small, but it really does make a difference – especially with little ones in the house.

A quick reminder of when it matters most: before eating or preparing food, after using the bathroom, when you get home, and whenever someone in the family is feeling under the weather. Teach the kids to sing 'Happy Birthday' twice while they scrub and they'll get to 20 seconds every time (we can't promise it will be in tune 😉).
