For Dr. Chibesa Sekeleti, womenโ€™s healthcare goes beyond diagnosing and treating medical conditions. It is about listening to women, understanding their experiences and ensuring they have the knowledge, support and specialized care they need to thrive. Driven by this belief, she has built a career centred on womenโ€™s health, holistic care and improving how healthcare is delivered.

Dr. Sekeleti graduated with a Bachelorโ€™s degree in Medicine from the Santa Clara School of Medicine in Cuba in 2012. She began her medical career with an internship at Ndola Central Hospital, followed by a rural posting at Lumwana District Hospital. These early experiences provided her with valuable clinical exposure and strengthened her understanding of healthcare delivery in different settings.

Determined to deepen her expertise, she pursued a Masterโ€™s degree in Obstetrics and Gynaecology in Wuhan, China. Upon returning to Zambia, she joined Marybegg Health Services, where she continues to serve as a General Practitioner and Obstetrician-Gynaecologist.

However, her vision for womenโ€™s health extended beyond clinical practice. Driven by a passion for specialized reproductive healthcare, Dr. Sekeleti co-founded the second private specialist womenโ€™s reproductive health facility in Zambia, located in Solwezi and opened in 2023. She currently serves as its Managing Director, helping advance access to specialized care for women.

Her journey has not been without challenges. As a woman in medicine, she has experienced the realities of being overlooked and having to work harder to earn professional recognition and respect. Rather than allowing these experiences to discourage her, she has used them as motivation to keep pushing forward and expanding her contribution to healthcare.

Looking ahead, Dr. Sekeleti hopes to contribute to improvements in the broader health system, with a particular interest in understanding how healthcare is delivered and how it can be made more responsive to people's needs. For her, meaningful progress requires looking beyond clinical outcomes to examine the systems, experiences and circumstances that shape a person's health.

At the heart of her work is a commitment to empowering women. She believes that womenโ€™s sexual and reproductive health remains an area that deserves greater understanding, awareness and attention. Her goal is not only to help women achieve better health outcomes but also to equip them with the information they need to make informed decisions about their bodies and their lives.

Her philosophy reflects a broader understanding of medicine: treating an illness is only part of the responsibility. Healthcare professionals must also recognize the person behind the condition, taking into account their emotional, social and individual needs. This holistic approach is particularly important in women's sexual and reproductive health, where compassionate care, trust and understanding can make a lasting difference.

Through her clinical practice, leadership and advocacy for women's health, Dr. Chibesa Sekeleti continues to champion a model of healthcare that places women at the centre of their care and recognizes the importance of both specialized treatment and informed decision-making.

The Zambia Medical Association (ZMA) recognizes Dr. Chibesa Sekeleti for her dedication to advancing women's health, challenging barriers in medicine and contributing to a more compassionate and holistic approach to healthcare.

Cholera thrives where poor sanitation, unsafe water, and poor hygiene create conditions for its spread. Anyone exposed to contaminated food or water can become infected.

The real problem is the neglect of basic hygiene and sanitation practices. If you eat carelessly, drink unsafe water, ignore handwashing, and tolerate filthy surroundings, you are inviting cholera into your life. Stop living carelessly and start taking hygiene seriously!

Keeping yourself and your community clean is not optional; it is a responsibility that can save lives. Cholera is preventable, but only if we stop giving it room to thrive.

3 Cs for the Prevention of cholera:

1. Clean and Safe Water
Drink and use water that is boiled for a full rolling minute or treated with chlorine. Store drinking water in a clean, covered container with a small opening or spout, and pour it out rather than dipping cups inside.

2. Clean Hands:
Wash your hands frequently with soap and safe water especially before, during, and after preparing food, before eating, and after using the toilet or changing the babies nappies. Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer if soap and water are not available.

3. Early Care:
Seek medical attention immediately at the nearest health facility or cholera treatment center at the very first signs of watery diarrhea or vomiting, even before severe dehydration sets in. Administer oral rehydration solution (ORS) or a clean sugar-salt solution right away while heading to care

Dr. Allan Musonda is a Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist whose career spans over two decades of dedicated service in Zambiaโ€™s healthcare sector, marked by clinical excellence, healthcare leadership and a passion for medical education.

Since beginning his career in 2001 as a Junior Resident Medical Officer (JRMO) at the then Ndola Central Hospital, where he served as Secretary General of the Resident Doctors Association of Zambia (RDAZ) Ndola Branch, Dr. Musonda has served in various healthcare institutions, including Kasama General Hospital, where he gained valuable rural healthcare experience, served as Acting Executive Director and was among the early doctors in Northern Province trained in Antiretroviral Therapy (ART). His passion for Obstetrics and Gynaecology led him to pursue specialist training at the University Teaching Hospital (UTH) under the University of Zambia in 2006.

Throughout his career, Dr. Musonda has contributed to strengthening healthcare delivery at Chawama and Chilenje Level One Hospitals, helping improve maternity services, operationalize the operating theatre at Chawama and mentor young doctors in essential obstetric and gynaecological procedures. At Chilenje, he also contributed to establishing an internship programme that emphasizes hands-on clinical training. His dedication has earned him three Labor Day awards for being the most hardworking doctor, in 2010 and 2012 at UTH, and in 2021 from the Lusaka Provincial Health Office.

Beyond clinical practice and leadership, Dr. Musonda is passionate about medical education. He currently teaches medical students at the University of Zambia and Lusaka Apex Medical University, taking great satisfaction in seeing his students graduate and develop into medical professionals serving in both the public and private sectors.

For Dr. Musonda, one of the greatest rewards of medicine is seeing mothers and their babies achieve positive outcomes and knowing that patients trust him enough to return for his care. Looking ahead, he hopes to dedicate even more time to teaching and mentoring young doctors, ensuring that his knowledge and experience continue to shape the next generation of medical professionals.

The Zambia Medical Association celebrates Dr. Allan Musonda for his dedication to patient care, healthcare development and medical education. His journey reflects the lasting impact that committed medical professionals can have on patients, healthcare institutions and the future of medicine in Zambia.

Speaking on behalf of ZMA President Dr. Masiku Phiri, ZMA Secretary General Dr. Innocent Ngwira welcomed the inductees into the Zambia Medical Association. He reminded them that today's ceremony is not only a celebration of their achievements, but also a solemn reminder of the responsibilities they now bear as custodians of health and life. He emphasized that medicine is not merely a career, but a noble calling grounded in integrity, compassion, humility, and lifelong learning. Dr. Ngwira underscored the importance of service to humanity, continuous professional development, and ethical responsibility, while encouraging the inductees to actively contribute to health systems, medical research, education, and national development.

Speaking on behalf of the Guest of Honour, Dr. Kennedy Lishimpi, Dr. Godfrey Phiri congratulated the 66 newly inducted doctors, reminding them that today marks not just the end of their academic journey, but the beginning of a life of service and responsibility as custodians of health and life. He urged the new doctors not to measure success solely by service in large hospitals, but by their willingness to serve in district hospitals, rural health centres, and community outreaches where the need is greatest. He further emphasized that while Zambia continues to invest in digital health systems such as SmartCare, EHR, and telemedicine, technology must remain as a tool to enhance care and should never replace the human connection between doctor and patient.

In his address, Brig. Gen. Prof. Lawson Simapuka, Executive Director of the National Forensic Authority, highlighted the integration of medicine with forensic science and that accurate medical documentation, ethical conduct, and scientific rigor are critical to strengthening national health systems. He closed with a call for graduates to uphold the dignity of their profession, prioritize patient well-being, and explore emerging fields that contribute to justice and healthcare advancement.

The Vice Chancellor, Dr. Balamurugan Easwaran, emphasized the values of lifelong learning, integrity, and compassion, noting that academic achievement is not an end in itself, but a gateway to greater professional responsibility, one that extends beyond clinical knowledge to uphold human dignity and ethical service. He further congratulated the inductees and warmly welcomed them into the fraternity of Texila American University graduates.

Before leading the recitation of the oath, a powerful symbol of dedication to the noble profession of medicine, the Zambia Medical Association Secretary General, Dr. Ngwira reminded the inductees that becoming a doctor is an honour that has commanded respect throughout history, but one that must be practiced with ethics at its core. He emphasized that a doctor should never be stranded or feel hopeless after graduation, as medicine offers a wide and open career path. He encouraged them to explore diverse opportunities beyond general practice, including Clinical specialization, Research and Academia.

In his closing remarks, the Dean of the School of Medicine, Dr. Amit Kumar Singh, emphasized that success in medicine rests not only on knowledge but also on the character and values one upholds. He stressed the need to nurture professionalism and empathy alongside clinical competence, and encouraged the 66 new doctors to continually reflect on their oath as they navigate the challenges and opportunities ahead, ensuring their practice remains anchored in service and integrity.

As these 66 newly inducted doctors embark on their medical journey, we celebrate their achievement and look forward to witnessing their impact in the field of medicine and beyond!

During the ceremony, Lusaka Apex Medical University Vice Chancellor, Prof. Evarist Njelesani, urged the inductees to diligently uphold their professional duties, emphasizing kindness, respect, and humility in all interactions with patients and to conscientiously contribute to improving global health outcomes. Prof. Njelesani congratulated the inductees on their hard work and resilience, and commended the Zambia Medical Association (ZMA) for its outstanding leadership as the mother body of medical professionals in Zambia.

In his remarks, the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Dr. Frederick Sinyinza, emphasized that becoming a physician goes beyond acquiring knowledge, it is about embodying compassion, humility, and an unwavering commitment to healing. He urged the newly inducted doctors to embrace their professional oath with pride and dedication, and to make a positive contribution to patient care and the broader medical community.

Once again, congratulations to all the newly inducted Medical Doctors from Lusaka Apex Medical University!
