Medicines are supposed to be kept between a certain temperature range (between 8 and 25 Degrees Celsius and 2 to 8 degrees for the refrigerated ones). Therefore each well functioning pharmacy is supposed to have at least one functioning air conditioner (Aircon) to make sure the room temperature is maintained within the range.

Have you wondered Why some brands of the same medicine expensive than others? We will discuss in the next post.

WHAT IS A STYE (SONKELA), WHAT CAUSES IT AND HOW DO YOU TREAT IT?

A stye (locally known as insonkela), medically called a hordeolum, is a painful, usually localized swelling of the eyelid caused by inflammation/infection involving an eyelid gland or eyelash follicle. Bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus are commonly involved.

Your hands can play a role in causing a STYE,
Think about how many times people:
- Rub their eyes.
- Touch their eyes after touching their phone.
- Scratch their eyelids
- Apply cosmetics with unclean hands.
- Share towels or face clothes.

These actions can introduce bacteria around the eyelid.

So what should you do when you notice a stye?

The first thing is usually warm compresses.

Place a clean, warm—not burning hot—cloth over the closed eyelid for about 5–10 minutes, several times a day. This can help the blocked gland drain naturally.

• Don't squeeze it.

• Don't try to burst it with your fingers.

• Don't keep rubbing the eye.

• Avoid eye makeup and contact lenses until it settles.

Most simple styes improve without needing oral antibiotics.

WHAT ANTIBIOTICS CAN BE PRESCRIBED?

First, understand this:

There is no single ā€œbest antibioticā€ for every stye.

For a straightforward external stye, antibiotics may not be necessary at all.
But depending on the type of stye and whether there is infection spreading into the surrounding eyelid, treatments such as erythromycin ophthalmic ointment or Tetracycline Opthalmic ointment, in selected cases, oral antibiotics.

When a stye is associated with preseptal cellulitis—infection spreading into the tissues around the eye, Use oral antibiotics such as amoxicillin-clavulanate, cephalexin, clindamycin or other appropriate antibiotics, depending on the individual situation, allergies and local resistance patterns.

For an internal hordeolum, oral antibiotics may sometimes be used, particularly when there is significant surrounding infection.

If swelling is rapidly spreading, you develop fever, severe pain, vision changes, bulging of the eye, or pain/difficulty moving the eye, seek medical attention urgently. These features can indicate a more serious infection around the eye.

Don't self-prescribe antibiotics simply because you see a lump on your eyelid.

A Drug making you drowsy (dizziness) doesn't mean it's the most powerful (effective) compared to the other alternative that doesn't make you drowsy.
Drowsiness (dizziness) is just one of the side effects (adverse) of some drugs, others may not have that side effect and yet might be more effective than the ones causing drowsiness.

DOES TAKING PANADOL (PARACETAMOL) AFFECT YOUR MALARIA RDT RESULTS? šŸ¦ŸšŸ’Š
For years, we’ve lived with a common myth in our communities: that taking paracetamol (Panadol) before testing for malaria can affect the malaria Rapid Diagnostic Test (RDT) and cause a false-negative result.

Let’s clear this up.

WHAT IS MALARIA?
Malaria is a parasitic disease caused by Plasmodium parasites and transmitted to humans through the bite of an infected female Anopheles mosquito. 🦟
SO, WHAT ABOUT PARACETAMOL?
Paracetamol (acetaminophen) is a medicine commonly used to reduce fever and relieve pain.
Taking paracetamol before a malaria RDT does not normally interfere with the malaria parasite antigens that the RDT is designed to detect.

In other words, taking paracetamol before testing does not make malaria ā€œdisappearā€ from the RDT or normally turn a positive test into a negative one.

What paracetamol can do is reduce symptoms such as fever, headache, and body aches. So you may feel better temporarily, but that does not mean the malaria infection is gone.

Therefore, if you have symptoms suggestive of malaria, do not avoid testing simply because you have taken paracetamol.

, a malaria RDT can sometimes be negative even when a person has malaria. This can happen for several reasons, including testing very early in the infection, low parasite levels, or differences in the type and quality of RDT being used.
