FARMERS LEADING THE WAY IN DIPTANK REHABILITATION!

Gleirncane Diptank | Ward 5, Bindura District, Mashonaland Central Province

A remarkable demonstration of community ownership and commitment to livestock health!

Farmers in Ward 20 of Bindura District have taken the initiative to rehabilitate Gleirncane Diptank, which had fallen into a dilapidated state. The rehabilitation works are progressing well, reflecting the farmers’ determination to protect their livestock and livelihoods.

The diptank serves 1,181 cattle, making it a critical facility in the prevention and control of tick-borne diseases.

This initiative demonstrates a growing appreciation among livestock farmers that regular dipping is essential in controlling ticks and tick-borne diseases, reducing cattle deaths and safeguarding household incomes.

The Government, through the Directorate of Veterinary Services, continues to applaud and support such farmer-led initiatives, which complement national efforts to strengthen animal health and improve livestock productivity.

When farmers take ownership, communities become stronger, livestock become healthier, and livelihoods are protected!

Together, we can reduce cattle deaths from tick-borne diseases.

ZIMBABWE STRENGTHENS PANDEMIC PREPAREDNESS THROUGH THE PANDEMIC FUND GRANT

The Ministry of Agriculture, Mechanisation and Water Resources Development today participated in the official launch of the Pandemic Fund Grant at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Harare, marking an important milestone in strengthening Zimbabwe’s capacity to prevent, detect and respond to public health threats.

The Ministry was represented by Dr Pious Makaya, Chief Director of Veterinary Services, who attended on behalf of the Honourable Minister, alongside representatives from other Government Ministries, development partners and key stakeholders.

The initiative underscores the importance of the One Health approach, which recognises the interconnectedness of human, animal and environmental health in preventing and responding to emerging infectious diseases and potential pandemics.

Through strengthened disease surveillance, laboratory diagnostic capacity, early warning systems and multisectoral collaboration, the initiative is expected to enhance Zimbabwe’s preparedness and resilience against future health threats.

Protecting animal health is protecting human health — together, we build a safer and more resilient Zimbabwe!

ZIMBABWE LAUNCHES THE PROJECT ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL AND BIOSECURITY GUIDELINES FOR SMALL-SCALE FISH FARMERS

The Ministry of Agriculture, Mechanisation and Water Resources Development, together with the Ministry of Environment, Climate and Wildlife, today, 27 October 2026, officially launched the project on the development of environmental and biosecurity guidelines for small-scale fish farmers in Zimbabwe at the Monomotapa Hotel in Harare.

The project is funded by Fish4ACP and managed by the Zimbabwe Environmental Law Organisation (ZELO).

It aims to provide practical guidance on environmental management, disease prevention, farm hygiene, responsible fish health management and measures to minimise the introduction and spread of aquatic animal diseases.

The guidelines will support small-scale fish farmers in adopting sustainable aquaculture practices, protecting the environment, reducing disease-related losses and improving fish production and livelihoods.

This initiative represents an important step towards strengthening aquatic animal health, promoting environmentally responsible aquaculture and supporting the sustainable growth of Zimbabwe’s fish farming industry.

ZIMBABWE STRENGTHENS VETERINARY TECHNICAL CAPACITY TO IMPROVE LIVESTOCK HEALTH AND PRODUCTIVITY

📅 Dates: 26–31 October 2026
📍 Venue: Matobo Research Station, Zimbabwe

The Directorate of Veterinary Services is conducting a national technical capacity-building programme targeting District Veterinary Officers, Government Veterinary Officers and Provincial Veterinary Epidemiologists.

The training focuses on artificial insemination and genetic improvement, liquid nitrogen and cryogenic technologies, January Disease vaccination, and decentralised veterinary laboratory diagnostics.

The initiative aims to equip veterinary professionals with practical skills to strengthen disease prevention, improve livestock breeding programmes and maximise the benefits of Government investments in modern veterinary technologies.

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR FARMERS?

For livestock farmers, this initiative is expected to translate into healthier cattle, fewer preventable livestock deaths, improved breeding services, better-quality herds and increased livestock productivity.

Through improved disease detection, effective January Disease control and greater access to modern reproductive technologies, farmers stand to benefit from reduced livestock losses, improved calving performance, increased household incomes and more resilient livelihoods.

Ultimately, the goal is to ensure that Government investments in veterinary services deliver tangible benefits at farm level — protecting farmers’ livelihoods, growing the national herd and strengthening Zimbabwe’s food and nutrition security.

Empowering veterinarians, protecting farmers’ investments and transforming livestock production!

ARE YOU A PIG FARMER? PROTECT YOUR PIGS FROM HEAT STRESS!

As temperatures continue to rise, the Directorate of Veterinary Services urges pig farmers to take precautions against heat stress.

Pigs are particularly vulnerable to heat stress because they cannot sweat effectively!

WHAT TO DO

* Provide plenty of clean, cool drinking water.
* Ensure adequate shade and good ventilation.
* Feed pigs during cooler morning and evening hours.
* Keep housing cool and avoid overcrowding.
* Monitor pigs for excessive panting, weakness and loss of appetite.

WHAT NOT TO DO

* Do not transport or handle pigs during the hottest hours.
* Do not leave pigs exposed to direct sunlight.
* Do not overcrowd pig pens.
* Do not restrict access to drinking water.
* Do not force heat-stressed pigs to move.

REMEMBER: Severe heat stress can cause sudden deaths and significant economic losses!
