At our recent international programme in Puebla, Mexico, 213 patients were screened and 83 surgeries were performed. đź’™
Among them was seven-year-old Anayeli, who travelled 12 hours by bus with her mum, dad and brother to reach us.
Pre and Post Nurse Carmel Corso cared for Anayeli as she received cleft palate surgery. Although her cleft lip was repaired three years ago, she still struggled with speech, confidence and bullying. Cleft palate conditions can make eating and speaking difficult, so this surgery is an important step towards improved health and better communication.
Her brother had hoped to be treated for a bilateral cleft lip, but flu-like symptoms meant it wasn't safe to proceed this time.
Their father, Florencio, is looking forward to communicating with Anayeli more easily and, most importantly, understanding her better.
