How the Mother Wound Winds Up in Our Nervous System Until We Finally Heal 🌺
For women born into families with codependent mothers, a lot of us older daughters become highly capable, ultra-independent career women. We saw the cost of what our mothers carried: the daily self-abandonment. Perhaps she carried her martyrdom with pride and stuffed down her needs, yet underneath you could see the resentment linger. Because the nervous system doesn’t lie, we watched her self-abandon, tolerate, compensate, over-give and self-sacrifice in the name of love.
We grew up deciding we wanted different. We learnt to climb the corporate ladder, to become more capable than a lot of men at problem-solving, to find solutions and meet the needs of those around us, to excel in our careers and ask for little in return. It was self-abandonment dressed up as competence, success and achievement, self-sacrifice disguised as accomplishment, with a similar familial pattern of over-functioning sitting deep underneath.
Two sides of the same coin, both driven to avoid facing the same wound. The hyper-independent, capable daughter is born of a mother wound and a father wound, too.
This pattern of hyper-independence and capability comes at a cost to the woman who carries it: burnout, depletion, and the slow loss of her core feminine radiance. It costs her in relationships too, where she ends up carrying the man, leading, and providing the solutions. She carries the family and the mental load, and she stays the problem solver long after she’s tired of the role. It’s the same weight her mother carried, in a different outfit.
The good news is that what the body learnt, the body can unlearn.
If this feels familiar, this is the work we do in my 6-week program, From Burnout to Radiance, where we unwind the mother and father wounds, the nervous system responses and the unconscious conditioning that began long before today. It’s for the woman ready to stop over-functioning and start receiving from her feminine, reclaiming and reviving the goddess within.
