Last night, our Executive Director, Dr Kate Wylie, hosted the launch of the 2026 Medical Journal of Australia - The Lancet Countdown on Health and Climate Change report. It was fantastic to see so many DEA members in the room.

The event brought together leading voices from across the climate, health and policy sectors to explore the report findings and their implications for our region.

Discussions explored the need for a sustainable, high-quality, climate-resilient and net-zero health system in Australia, and the opportunity for Australia to put health at the centre of climate action as it takes on the COP31 Presidency of Negotiations.

The 2026 report of the Lancet Countdown on health and climate change has found that heat-related deaths are at a record high.

Almost three million deaths between 2016 and 2023 were attributable to human-caused climate change.

Researchers, and DEA, are calling for climate change to be declared a global health emergency.

The scariest thing about Halloween? The plastic waste! 🕸️

Fake spider webs are made from plastic-based materials that don't break down easily. These decorations can trap, injure and, sadly, even kill birds, bees, and other insects.

🎃 THE SCARIEST THING ABOUT HALLOWEEN IS THE PLASTIC WASTE.

If you're celebrating Halloween this year, here are some tricks to cut down on your waste:

✅ Create costumes using things you already own
✅ Make your own Halloween trick-or-treat bag by decorating or painting an old pillowcase or tote bag
✅ Make decorations out of recyclable and reusable materials
✅ Source some plastic-free treats

Helen Haines is well known for upholding the values of integrity, courage and decency.

At Doctors for the Environment Australia we have immense respect for Dr Haines who has always treated us with kindness and respect.

It is terrible that she has been subject to such violence and aggression.

Our thoughts are with her family and all who love her, as well as with the hospital staff who will be doing their very best for her.

Take care today everyone. There is cruelty in the world, but today let’s act with kindness and integrity, just like Helen would do.

iDEA: 25 Years and the Next Generation was incredible! 💚

A huge thank you to our medical students, members and staff who worked so hard to bring this conference to life. Together, we created something truly special.

Over the weekend, we heard inspiring talks on the climate impacts of war, the environmental cost of AI, the importance of protecting our water systems, housing as a health and climate solution, caring for mental health during the climate crisis, the importance of the birds in our backyards, and so much more.

We shared insights from our ‘Gas and its overlooked health risks’ campaign and discussed the urgent, growing public health threat posed by air pollution from fossil fuels. Clean air is a human right and it’s our duty as health professionals to speak up and make clean air a global health priority.

Being surrounded by so many passionate, like-minded people from across the generations, all working together to improve the health of their communities, made us feel energised, proud and hopeful. The future of health care and environmental advocacy is in good hands.

Here’s to another 25 years of working together for a healthy planet for healthy people 🌏

Things can and must change.

Our government must stop passing the buck. It’s time to put the health of people, planet and all living things ahead of the interests of the fossil fuel industry.

“A landmark ruling in the High Court has found planning authorities are required to consider the emissions caused by burning fossil fuels overseas when approving projects”.

This is a hugely significant win for human and environmental health.

A massive well done to the people of the Hunter Valley who stood up for their community and the planet. 👏👏👏
