Supported to Thrive in Early Parenthood (STEP) is a 6 week FREE early parent program for Mums & their Bubs aged between 1 - 6 months.

STEP is facilitated by Nat Gray RN/CHN/IBCLC from Milk & Kindness, who has both a long term lived and professional experience supporting families in the Pilbara.

STEP is a program that prioritises creating connections & joy in early parenthood at a time when the outside ‘noise’ can feel pretty judgy and overwhelming. At STEP we gather in a judgement free space, having evidence-based conversations with local health professionals, whilst also sharing our own experiences with courage and honesty.

The STEP program sessions cover a range of parent requested topics including, postpartum recovery and returning to exercise, tips for adjusting to parenthood, infant development & milestones, managing sleep & settling with your little one, potential feeding challenges, support options for partners, and raising awareness about maternal and family mental health & wellbeing.

STEP is made possible with generous funding from Regional Development Australia’s  (RDA) West Pilbara Communities for Children (WPCFC) grant & the Dampier Community Association (DCA).

If you’d like to our upcoming round of STEP commencing on Tuesday 3 November head to our Milky website www.milkandkindness.com.au to secure your spot. Spaces are limited and our first-time Mummas will get first priority!

📣📣 If you’re a Mumma currently breastfeeding or expressing breastmilk for your little one, here’s an opportunity to contribute to lactation & breastfeeding science & care by donating your breastmilk to the UWA Biobank in Perth. Click on the link below to see how you can participate 💫💫💫

https://wahumanmilkbiobank.com/

WA women are being called on to provide breast milk samples, which will be used for global research into infant nutrition and to help solve problems including low milk production and mastitis.

"What we're trying to do is find that molecule that tells us that a mother has low supply and then we can measure it just like we do for a blood test for low iron," Professor Donna Geddes, a leading lactation researcher and project lead, told Jo Trilling on 102.5 ABC Perth Afternoons.

"50 per cent of women give up (on breastfeeding) by not having enough milk. So, if I can find something in the milk that we can measure and help mothers understand what's going on, then we have a better chance of extending her lactation," she said.

"We can provide a solution instead of just cheerleading these mothers, patting them on the back, making them express multiple times a day to breastfeed."

The milk will be housed in a new state-of-the-art biobank at UWA in Perth, which is the first of its kind in Australia. The bank has already collected 1,000 samples but can hold more than 100,000.

Breastfeeding women who want to contribute can visit the biobank and express onsite; take their own samples at home, freeze them and drop them off; or those living regionally can request a preservative pack to be delivered.

"We have developed a preservative — like a little freeze-dried powder in the bottom of a tube — we can send you a pack of those. You put the milk in and you pop it in the post and you send it back to us."

Ms Geddes said it was important to collect samples from all different geographical locations across WA.

"We don't know how really hot weather impacts a mother's ability to make milk or if you're out in the Wheatbelt and you're exposed to different chemicals with farming, we don't know how that impacts the mum and her composition," she said.

"We've always been looking at the baby, but we need to look at the mum."

Looking back to 1996 💙

When we were freshly minted new parents, functioning on limited sleep, surges of adrenaline, learning to breastfeed and feeling like each day we were making parenting up on the fly; hoping we didn’t screw (you) up while we figured this parenting gig out 🤞😅

The expectation versus reality of early parenthood is the BIGGIEEE shift that no one can prepare you for and that changes you permanently in multiple ways you could never have imagined 💥💫

So grateful that we got to find our feet and ‘practice’ with this sweet baby boy 🥹, while also discovering our new Mum & Dad versions of ourselves Harri Gray 💙💙💙

If you’re a new parent? I see you. I get it. 🫶🏼

Hello there!…thanks so much for sticking around 🙏 and a warm welcome if you’re new to Milk & Kindness. I really appreciate each & every one of you ☺️

I’ve been working away bts, balancing the wearing of many hats like most other solo clinicians working in private practice 🥰 and although I’ve not had the opportunity to show up here as regularly as the algorithm (or I) would like 🙃, I’m incredibly grateful that many of you have still found your way here when you needed to ✨

And I couldn’t have done it without you! 🫶🏼

With one of the busiest starts to any year to date for M & K, I’m so blessed for the power of word of mouth, and want to thank every one of you in this incredibly supportive community of families, friends & health professionals who continue to recommend Milk & Kindness services to others when it’s needed the most 🙏

While what my LC biz offers expectant & new families isn’t rocket science 🚀 it is 100% grounded in science! What you will always get when working with Nat is the ‘whole package’ as you rightly deserve, because it’s NEVER EVER JUST ABOUT THE FEEDING is it Mumma? I know you’re out there working really hard. I see you! You’ve got this lovely 🥹💕
