I can't believe our scruffy little ragamuffin has been stealing hearts for 9 whole years now! And I really can't believe what a total sweetheart he turned out to be. 💚💚💚

He's the best foster brother to all our rescues, loves a cuddle with his Rory-girl, and is so protective of 'big' little sister Sophie. 💚💚💚

And these days - he's even been known to slow down enough to come for couch cuddles with some of the humans too! 😆

Happy Gotcha Day Baby Boy!

A couple of years ago, we made Rory a promise that there would be no more dressing her up in ridiculous costumes.

This was shortly after I realised I'd perhaps gone a *little* too far with a particular Dolly Parton outfit... 😂

Of course, we reserved the right to make exceptions if a client *really, really, REALLY* needed a dress-up for therapeutic purposes.

But otherwise, Rory was officially retired from the costume department.

Thankfully, the wonders of AI have come to the rescue!

So this Halloween, we're delighted to present:

Rory Potter and the Wizarding Menagerie, featuring Rory, Sophie, Winston, Georgie and Sparky in their finest Hogwarts-inspired costumes.

And - not a single animal had to put on a wig, robe or pair of glasses!

Happy Halloween from all of us at 12 Points! 🎃

One of the toughest things about being a therapist is that we often don't get to find out how things turn out for the people we've worked with.

And we do wonder. Especially about the kids and teens we've worked with over the years – particularly when we do the maths and realise they'd be adults by now!

Thankfully, every now and then, someone gets back in touch. And it's always pretty amazing to hear how they're doing!

This was one of those moments. More than a decade after our work together ended, an email arrived that made me incredibly happy – and incredibly proud to have played even a small part in this person's story.

So, if you've ever thought about getting in touch with an old therapist (or teacher, or mentor) to let them know how you're going, take this as your sign to do just that!

There's a very good chance you'll make their day – if not their year.

It definitely made mine!

🚦 𝗚𝗥𝗘𝗘𝗡 𝗙𝗟𝗔𝗚 𝗦𝗘𝗥𝗜𝗘𝗦 | 𝗘𝘃𝗲𝗻 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵𝘆 𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽𝘀 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗱-𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗺𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀.

You know those moments when a perfectly reasonable conversation suddenly turns into an argument? Or when you try and calm a situation down, but the more you talk, the worse it gets?

Sometimes the problem isn't *what* you're talking about. It's that someone's simply not in the right physical or mental space to have that conversation.

Being in a healthy relationship doesn't mean you'll never get overwhelmed, frustrated, irritated or just down right crabby!

But it 𝘥𝘰𝘦𝘴 mean learning to recognise when that's happening - and having a plan on what to do when it does.

That's where our 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰 𝗟𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝘆 comes in.

🔴 𝗥𝗘𝗗 = 𝗥𝗘𝗦𝗘𝗧 – We're too overwhelmed to talk productively. Stop, separate and give your nervous system time to settle.

🟠 𝗢𝗥𝗔𝗡𝗚𝗘 = 𝗣𝗔𝗨𝗦𝗘 – We're not quite in the right space for a 𝘣𝘪𝘨 talk just yet. Check in with what you might need before trying to tackle anything heavy.

🟢 𝗚𝗥𝗘𝗘𝗡 = 𝗖𝗟𝗘𝗔𝗥 – We're ready to talk, listen, understand each other and work out what happens next.

The important bits:

1) Everyone involved needs to agree to the rules ahead of time (including where the neutral space is for everyone, what the 'calm down' strategies look like, and how long the reset lasts before first check-in).

2) Anyone can call orange or red - and that includes the kids.

3) Taking a break is not the same as avoiding the conversation.

4) The agreement is that you come back to it when everyone is ready.

It's a simple approach, but one that can make a real difference to how couples and families handle those tricky conversations and moments.

Swipe through for the steps, and consider saving this one to work through together next time everyone's in green.

If you and your family could use some support building healthier ways to communicate, our team at 12 Points works with couples, parents, children and teens.

Kids aren’t born knowing how to regulate big feelings. They learn through thousands of experiences of becoming overwhelmed - in big and small ways - having a steady adult help them through, and eventually finding their way back.

That doesn’t mean parents need to be perfectly calm 100% of the time. But our ability to regulate really matters.

If we want children to build these skills, part of the work is noticing what we bring into the room, and strengthening the same skills we’re asking of them.

Sometimes the hardest part of parenting is realising that something you’re doing out of love isn’t landing that way.

Especially when you’re working your butt off to make sure your kids never feel the way you did.

You remember what it was like to feel dismissed, unsupported or misunderstood. Of course you want something different for them.

But we all have blind spots. And sometimes, being so focused on what we’re trying to do differently makes it harder to notice what’s happening right in front of us.

The details might look nothing like our childhood, but our kid can still end up feeling - and saying - painfully familiar things:

“Y𝘰𝘶 𝘥𝘰𝘯’𝘵 𝘨𝘦𝘵 𝘮𝘦. 𝘠𝘰𝘶’𝘳𝘦 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘩𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘸𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘐’𝘮 𝘵𝘳𝘺𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘰 𝘵𝘦𝘭𝘭 𝘺𝘰𝘶.”

That’s some hard feedback to hear - especially when you’re trying so bloody hard!

Importantly, we're never going to get this right 100% of the time - that's impossible - and honestly? Not even necessary.

But we can come back and say:

“I 𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘨𝘩𝘵 𝘐 𝘸𝘢𝘴 𝘩𝘦𝘭𝘱𝘪𝘯𝘨. 𝘛𝘦𝘭𝘭 𝘮𝘦 𝘸𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘐’𝘮 𝘮𝘪𝘴𝘴𝘪𝘯𝘨.”

Or:

“𝘐 𝘥𝘪𝘥𝘯’𝘵 𝘭𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘯 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘭𝘺. 𝘐’𝘮 𝘴𝘰𝘳𝘳𝘺. 𝘊𝘢𝘯 𝘸𝘦 𝘵𝘳𝘺 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘢𝘨𝘢𝘪𝘯?”

And if that sounds too hard, or overly simplistic - just take a moment and think how different it might have felt to hear that from your own parent.

To have them take your experience seriously, own a misstep and try to put things right.

That’s something truly different we can definitely give our kids.

Our annual Halloween gallery is back!

A few years ago, we promised the therapy dogs we'd stop dressing them up for Halloween.

We did NOT promise to stop finding increasingly ridiculous ways to celebrate it.

And so, the Halloween canvases were born!

This year's masterpieces are on display at the clinic until 31 October. Come and admire our very cute (and considerably less inconvenienced) models.

For a lot of parents, consent is one of those conversations they assume they’ll deal with “later”.

When their kids start dating.
When s*x becomes relevant.
When there’s a reason to worry.

But ideally, we want to have done a lot of the groundwork before they ever get to that point.

Because consent isn’t just about s*x.

It’s about boundaries, empathy, disappointment, noticing when someone is uncomfortable, and understanding that even when you don’t like or understand another person’s “no”, you still have to respect it.

And kids start learning all of that from us much earlier than we probably realise.

The carousel gives you the practical version: what consent education can look like from preschool through to the teenage years.

The full blog goes a bit further.

It includes discussion of the recent Cornell University allegations, victim-blaming, bystander responsibility, and the kinds of questions adults ask when stories like this hit the news. So a gentle content note before you click through: the post refers to s*xual violence.

It also looks at why consent education needs to include more than simply teaching our kids not to harm someone directly.

We also want them to recognise when somebody else may be unsafe, vulnerable or unable to advocate for themselves, and to understand that doing nothing is still a choice.

Because these skills don’t magically appear at 16 or 21.

We build them.

Bit by bit, conversation by conversation, long before the stakes get that high.

This is an excerpt from one of the couples therapy webinars Mat and I recorded for the SPARKSFIRE Professional Development series for mental health clinicians.

In this bit, we were talking about our own relationship — and the very much ongoing process of trying to apply the same foundational relationship skills we talk about with couples ourselves. 𝘉𝘦𝘤𝘢𝘶𝘴𝘦 𝘣𝘦𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘸𝘰 𝘤𝘰𝘶𝘱𝘭𝘦𝘴 𝘤𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘴𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘰𝘳𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 *𝘯𝘰𝘵* 𝘢𝘵𝘵𝘦𝘮𝘱𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘸𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘣𝘦 𝘢 𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘵𝘭𝘦 𝘦𝘮𝘣𝘢𝘳𝘳𝘢𝘴𝘴𝘪𝘯𝘨.

More specifically, we were talking about what changed as we learned more about our different neurotypes so late in our lives and so late in our relationship: and how curiosity, communication and compromise helped us make sense of those differences.

This is not because we feel we've mastered all of this! 😆

We definitely haven’t - and we're definitely not kidding about it being an 𝘰𝘯𝘨𝘰𝘪𝘯𝘨 process!

We're sharing this purely because these are some of the things we’ve found helpful personally, and professionally, when it comes to building and sustaining relationships for the long haul.

So what about you? What are your best relationship green flags?
