👟 The Science of 'Super Shoes': Performance vs. Injury Risk 🧠
Advanced Footwear Technology (AFT) with carbon fiber plates has revolutionized running performance, but what does it actually do to your biomechanics?
A recent study of 23 elite distance runners examined how running in neutral, responsive foam, and AFT shoes affects key factors linked to bone stress injuries (BSIs).
Here is what the biomechanical data revealed:
📉 Lower Cadence: Runners showed lower cadence when wearing AFT compared to neutral or responsive foam shoes.
🔄 Higher Rearfoot Eversion Excursion: Neutral shoes kept eversion excursion lower compared to both AFT and responsive foam.
⚡ Higher Rearfoot Eversion Velocity: Responsive foam resulted in a higher velocity than both neutral and AFT.
🦶 Lower Ankle Plantarflexion Moment: AFT and responsive foam showed a lower moment than neutral shoes.
What does this mean for runners? Although these individual biomechanical changes are small, the cumulative impact on your bones and lower extremities from high-mileage training and racing in these shoes could contribute to injuries.
If you use AFT for training and competition, make sure to factor these biomechanical shifts into your recovery and training plans.

It is important to check with your Podiatrist about your footwear choices, or speak with a local running based footwear store

✈️ Now boarding: your next career move.

We’re on the hunt for a Podiatrist to join us on maternity leave cover - full or part-time - across Geelong, the Surf Coast & Airlie Beach! 🌊

Think varied caseloads, a ridiculously supportive team, mentoring from a leading paediatric podiatrist, and yes - paid trips to the Whitsundays. ☀️

New grads + experienced podiatrists both welcome. Not sure yet? Come do a paid “day in the life” with us, no strings attached 👇
