DANII Foundation - T1 diabetes Who's looking after today's T1D's? OUR VISION is for a world where people with T1D live without Fear

The DANII Foundation (supporting Type 1 Diabetes) was established in 2012 by parents Donna and Brian Meads-Barlow as a legacy to their 17 year old daughter Daniella following her sudden passing in 2011 as a result of a night time hypoglycaemic episode - a diabetes complication more widely known as “Dead in Bed” syndrome. Danii went to bed a happy, healthy teenager, but sometime during the night, her blood glucose levels (BGL’s) fell so low that she became unresponsive and was unable to alert her parents that something was terribly wrong. Danii’s BGL’s fell to such a critically low level that she experienced convulsions, pushing her into a coma, and causing her death – alone and in silence. On learning that there was technology overseas that could have prevented Danii’s death, her parents knew what they had to do: through their own tragedy, they had to do everything possible to prevent another life being cut short. Through her passing, Danii gave her parents a parting gift: the inspiration to create a lasting legacy in her name and the courage to offer today’s T1D’s the care and safety they need to help them manage their diabetes and in doing so, help them live a normal, long and enjoyable life. The DANII Foundation supports the research, development and introduction of alert technology to assist in the management of Type 1 Diabetes.

44 Years with Type 1 Diabetes. Still Fighting for Access to Essential Technology.

Diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at just 12.5 years old, Angela has spent 44 years navigating the physical and emotional challenges of this lifelong condition.
Despite advances in diabetes technology, accessing an insulin pump remains a struggle for many Australian adults.
Government funding restrictions leave people like Angela facing significant financial barriers, with insulin pumps costing thousands of dollars to purchase privately.
That's where DANII Foundation stepped in. Angela received a temporary insulin pump for 12 months, giving her access to technology she otherwise couldn't afford.

But with this support comes an important question:

What happens when those 12 months come to an end?

As Angela powerfully reminds us:

“A chronic condition does not have an expiry date.”

Angela is now advocating for fairer access to insulin pump funding, reminding us that Type 1 Diabetes doesn't stop at 21 and neither should access to life-changing technology.

At DANII Foundation, we believe everyone living with Type 1 Diabetes deserves access to the technology and support they need, regardless of age or financial circumstances.
Together, we can help make that possible.

💧 A little reminder to drink some water today.💧

Hydration matters for everyone, but when you’re living with type 1 diabetes, it deserves a little extra attention.

When blood glucose levels are high, the body may lose more fluid through frequent urination, increasing the risk of dehydration. Staying hydrated is also particularly important when you’re unwell. 💙

Water is a great everyday choice for staying hydrated and sometimes the simplest habits are the easiest ones to forget.

So consider this your Monday reminder: check your glucose, take care of yourself… and don’t forget your water bottle. 💧

T1D community, are you good at remembering to drink enough water, or is this the reminder you needed today? 😅

💖Update about Ivy💖

Ivy lives with both Type 1 Diabetes and Dwarfism, bringing additional challenges to her everyday diabetes management.

Before receiving the Omnipod, Ivy used a tubed insulin pump, which her mum says often got in the way due to her short stature. Through the DANII Foundation Insulin Pump Scholarship, Ivy was able to access the tubeless Omnipod and has now been using it for over a year.
Being tubeless has made everyday life easier for Ivy, giving her more freedom, including being able to swim without disconnecting her pump.

But probably one of the most beautiful updates we received from Ivy’s family had nothing to do with numbers or diabetes management. This year, Ivy went to Book Week as herself.

Her older sister wrote a book about Ivy’s life and her experiences living with Dwarfism and Type 1 Diabetes so when it came time to choose a character for Book Week, Ivy celebrated her own story. 📖✨

Behind Ivy’s story is also a mum raising three girls on her own. As the sole provider for her family, Melisa says accessing Omnipod would not have been possible without the support of the DANII Foundation.

“We are blessed and truly overwhelmed that the DANII Foundation granted us the opportunity to use the Omnipod. Otherwise, it wouldn’t have been possible.”

✨This is why access to diabetes technology matters.✨
It’s not only about managing Type 1 Diabetes. It’s about finding technology that fits the individual, reducing some of the challenges families face every day, and giving children like Ivy more freedom to simply live their lives.
You can help change another life.💖

Living with type 1 diabetes isn’t only about managing blood glucose levels. There’s a mental and emotional side that often goes unseen.👀

Thinking about insulin. Planning meals. Watching numbers. Responding to highs and lows. Preparing for exercise, work, sleep, travel and then doing it all again tomorrow.

That constant responsibility can sometimes feel exhausting, overwhelming or isolating.

And while everyone experiences T1D differently, one thing is worth remembering: your mental wellbeing matters just as much as the numbers.

💭 We’d love to hear from our T1D community:

How does diabetes affect you mentally or emotionally, and what helps you on the harder days?

Whether it’s talking to someone who understands, exercising, taking some time for yourself, connecting with the T1D community or something completely different, share it below. 👇

Your experience might help someone else feel a little less alone today. 💗

💙 Meet Alexis - DANII Foundation Insulin Pump Scholarship Recipient 💙

For Alexis and her family, receiving an insulin pump has brought something incredibly valuable, a little more ease into an already busy everyday life.
Alexis is the middle of three children. She and her older brother are both Level 3 Autistic and non-verbal, and when Alexis was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes, her family knew she would be facing another set of challenges.

Before starting Omnipod 5, Alexis’ glucose levels could sometimes be difficult to maintain, and having four or more insulin injections every day was another part of diabetes management she found difficult.

Since receiving her Omnipod 5 through the DANII Foundation Insulin Pump Scholarship, everyday diabetes management has become a little easier.✨

Her mum says the pump has allowed their family to “breathe a little easier,” knowing Alexis is receiving more accurate insulin doses to support her health and wellbeing.
It has also made a difference in the little everyday moments. When the family is out together, they no longer need to find a private place to give Alexis her injections, giving them greater convenience and making outings that little bit easier.

“Anything that can make Lexi’s life a little easier is a blessing.”
For a family already navigating the demands of everyday life, changes like these can mean so much.
“A big thank you to the DANII Foundation who is sponsoring Lexi’s insulin pump. We are very grateful.”💙

This is why access to diabetes technology matters.
It can mean fewer injections, easier days out, greater reassurance for families and, most importantly, making life with Type 1 Diabetes that little bit easier.

You can help change another life.

For most people, the pancreas does its job quietly in the background. You eat, you sleep, you exercise and you rarely have to think about it.

For someone living with Type 1 Diabetes, it’s different. 💙
In T1D, the immune system destroys the insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas. This means the body can no longer produce enough insulin on its own so insulin has to be given every day to manage blood glucose and stay alive.

But T1D management is about so much more than taking insulin.
It can mean checking glucose levels throughout the day and night. Counting carbohydrates. Calculating insulin. Responding to highs and lows. Thinking about how food, exercise, stress, illness and sleep may affect glucose levels.
And then doing it all again tomorrow.
There are no weekends off. No holidays from diabetes. No switching it off when you go to sleep.
Technology such as insulin pumps and Continuous Glucose Monitors (CGMs) can help make diabetes management easier and provide valuable information but they don’t remove the need for daily management.

So if you know someone living with T1D, remember that there may be a lot happening behind the scenes that you never see.
The alarms.
The calculations.
The interrupted nights.
The decisions.
The mental load.
Sometimes u
understanding what someone carries is one of the simplest ways we can support them. 💙
