💙 When someone is overwhelmed, asking them to “just calm down” may require skills they cannot access in that moment.
Looking at sensory needs, communication, environment and demands can help us understand what the person needs—not simply what we want them to stop doing.
What looks like an “overreaction” may actually be the point where demands have exceeded the person's capacity to cope.
Helpful support can include reducing demands, creating predictability, modifying sensory input, allowing processing time, using clear communication, and co-regulating before problem-solving.
Regulation comes before reasoning.
