Finding an NDIS provider in Melbourne’s north.

Starting to look for NDIS supports can feel like a lot. Here are five simple steps to help you get going.

1. Check how your plan is managed. If your funding is NDIA-managed, you need to use a registered provider. If your plan is self-managed or plan-managed, you can choose registered or unregistered providers for most supports.

2. Use the NDIS Provider Finder. Enter your suburb or postcode to search for registered providers near you.

3. Ask for support. If your plan includes support coordination, your support coordinator can help connect you with providers.

4. Meet more than one provider. Ask about their experience, availability and how they will work with you and your family. Take the time you need to feel comfortable.

5. Get it in writing. A service agreement sets out what you and your provider have agreed.

Your NDIS plan, without the jargon.

If you’re a participant or a family member, you might hear people talk about “core”, “capacity building” and “capital”. Here’s what those words actually mean.

Core supports help with everyday life. This might be support with getting ready in the morning, preparing meals, getting out and about in your community, or transport.

Capacity building supports help you learn and grow. This might be therapy, building skills for independence, or working towards a goal like catching public transport on your own.

Capital supports are for bigger, one-off items. This might be assistive technology, or changes to your home like a ramp or an accessible bathroom.

Every plan is different, and not everyone has funding in all three. If you’re not sure how your plan works or how to use it, our Disability Inclusion team is happy to talk it through with you.

Wellness Wednesday at Orchard Road Community and Early Learning Centre.

This week’s Wellness Wednesday was all about cooking together. Our participants started by choosing which recipe they wanted to make from a few options, then headed to the supermarket to buy the ingredients.

Back in the ORELC in Doreen, everyone collaborated on the chopping and cooking to make a bacon and vegetable stir fry. There was plenty of laughter, and sharing the meal together was a highlight. While the stir fry was cooking, some participants relaxed with a bit of colouring.

Wellness Wednesdays is a social group that brings people together to build skills, make connections and enjoy time with others in the community.

Recently, our Wellness Wednesday was all about cupcakes! Our participants mixed, baked and decorated their own creations from scratch, with plenty of laughs and creativity along the way. Watch the reel to see the fun, and the very sprinkly results.

Y Whittlesea is now QIP Safeguarding Accredited.

This means independent assessors have reviewed how we keep children, young people, adults and families safe, and how we respond when something doesn't feel right.

Safeguarding is non-negotiable at the Y. You'll see it in everyday moments: how we listen, how we treat one another, and how easy we make it to speak up.

Look for the QIP Safeguarding Accredited symbol at our centres and on our website.

What are respite camps, and what does the Y offer?

Respite camps are supported overnight stays for people with disability. Participants get to try new things, build independence and make friends, while families and carers get a well-earned break.

At the Y, our all-abilities camps run across Victoria, and there is a style to suit different ages and interests:

✅Underage Camps for children and young people aged 7 to 17 years
✅Adult Camps for people aged 18 years and over
✅Y Retreats, relaxed weekends away for people of all abilities, where campers have choice and control over how they spend their time

Camps run for 2 to 3 nights, and our Y support team takes care of the organising. That includes all meals, snacks and drinks (we cater for dietary requirements), accessible venues, shared cabin accommodation, equipment and return bus transport from Y Leisure City, Epping. Flexible support ratios are available so each participant gets the right level of support.

Days are full of adventure, with high ropes, canoeing, archery and giant swings. There are also games, cooking, arts and crafts, discos and campfire nights.

Participants choose what they want to do, so every camp experience is shaped by their own interests.

Our experienced support staff are with participants day and night. They hold Working with Children Checks, Police Checks and NDIS Worker Clearance, and are trained in first aid and CPR.

Y Whittlesea is also accredited with the Australian Childhood Foundation Safeguarding program.

Camps can be funded through the NDIS (National Disability Insurance Scheme) or self funded.

Every carer needs time to rest. For families supporting a young person or adult with disability, that time is rare, and it matters a great deal.

Our Respite Camps are designed with two people in mind: the carer who needs a real break, and the participant who deserves an experience that is theirs alone.

Camps run for children from 7 years of age through to adults, at various locations across Victoria.

Every camp is planned around each participant's individual needs, and families are partners in that planning, because you know your family member best.
