I nearly died trying to be the mum my daughter needed.
And the terrifying part? Everyone thought I was coping.
Appointments. Meltdowns. Sleepless nights. Fighting for support. Smiling in photos. Saying βIβm fine.β
Meanwhile, I was disappearing.
Hereβs what Iβd tell the mum I was 10 years ago:
Being called STRONG wonβt save you.
People will praise your resilience while you drown. You deserve help NOW.
Your childβs needs donβt erase yours.
Youβre allowed a life beyond therapies, paperwork and survival.
Functioning isnβt the same as coping.
Adrenaline gets you through crises, not years of living in one.
A quiet house doesnβt switch off your alarm system.
After years of hypervigilance, even sitting on the couch can feel unsafe.
You can adore your child and grieve your life.
Resentment and grief donβt cancel out love.
The feelings you keep swallowing deserve space.
The rage after a meltdown. The fear you bury. The grief you swallow to get through Tuesday. Chronic stress can look like a clenched jaw, shallow breathing or numbness. Somatic work helps you notice and make room for what youβve had no time to feel.
You canβt breathe your way out of inadequate support.
Regulation matters. So do respite, sleep, money and actual disability services.
You are a human being, not an unpaid support system.
Your child deserves care. SO DO YOU.
Donβt wait until you nearly die to prove you need help.
I wish Iβd heard that before severe burnout, addiction and the long road back to myself.
Now, as a somatic practitioner working with special needs mums, I see women who look βfineβ while drowning inside.
You deserve help before you get where I did.
