Unfortunately, advocacy services for Meniere's in Australia are no longer freely supported by the Australian Government. Posts, costs and upkeep by Stephen Spring, former VP of the Meniere's Research Fund Inc at Sydney University (dissolved and closed 2008). Disclosures: Stephen Spring is an otolaryngology science communicator and founder of otogenex, a private, early stage genomic and bio-marker service provider to the medical profession. History: Over 10 years ago the Meniere’s volunteer New South Wales and Victorian support groups who founded the research team at Sydney University combined to form Meniere’s Australia. The NSW face to face doctor patient meetings were cancelled. Meniere’s Australia then incorporated itself into a new brand “Whirled Foundation” to try to provide government funded support and advocacy services for Australians with MD and other vestibular orders. It said it was the national non-profit, non-government organisation for vestibular problem sufferers, but collapsed in 2018 which left no government funded advocacy service for Australian suffering with vestibular disorders. All documents and databases were lost or seized. Stephen Spring keeps this page open, personally pays for journals, upkeep and rights to the Meniere's Australia name.

Just back from Barany 2026 in Shanghai.

In 1996, Niklas wrote a most remarkable book, "The Human Endolymphatic Sac, with Particular regard to Ménière's Disease" hot on the heals of Professor Dr Peter Paul van Benthem's 1992 thesis, "Histophysiological studies of the inner ear: with emphasis on endolymphatic hydrops",at Utrecht University.

These are the long forgotten, but key books understanding MD.

Sound Pharmaceutical's trial for Ebselen for MD - results now available.

This study uses the unique USA criteria, not the international Barany criteria. There are differences in the two criteria with the USA definition of MD more nebulous than Barany. MD and MAV can have indistinguishable symptoms upon presentation, with many clinicians unable to say which one is present (they have different bio-signatures) probably worth noting if expectations are high. The subjects were free to use none FDA approved Betahistine (approval revoked in 1970s for study design flaws) as well as Ebselen in combination and exclusion criteria was quite strict, (steroid use excluded subjects) so it is tricky, on the limited subject numbers to draw a conclusion as to the active ingredients or any synergy with Ebselen and Betahistine.

This phase 3 primary endpoints were for hearing only. Vertigo was not considered as a primary endpoint which is kind of kooky, given it’s the most distressing symptom. Possibly ignoring the balance aspect, it might have more of a chance for FDA approval. It’s not clear in this further study if participants had to be in a fully active phase of the disease with all symptoms of vertigo or dizziness, aural fullness, tinnitus with at least two vertigo attacks a month in consecutive months before enrolment which is the usual practice. No assessment of dizziness handicap or tinnitus score seems to have been published prior, these are self assessments, not objective ones.

Encouraging in some aspects, but only minor differences to placebo in other respects.
