I recently read something that made me stop and think.
“Your muscle mass says more about the way you’re ageing than the lines around your eyes.”
Now, as someone who works in skin health, I still care about the lines around my eyes.
Obviously. 😏
But at 50, I’m starting to think a little differently about how I exercise.
I currently do Pilates around five times a week. I love it, particularly for my mental wellbeing and keeping my spine mobile.
It’s become an important part of my routine.
But lately, I’ve been considering dropping back to two sessions a week and introducing some proper strength training.
And by strength training, I mean lifting progressively heavier weights.
Because I’m becoming increasingly aware that maintaining muscle and building strength matter as we get older.
And while Pilates gives me plenty of benefits, I want to make sure I’m challenging my muscles in ways that support my strength over the coming decades.
The funny thing is, I spend a lot of time talking to clients about preserving muscle during weight management.
Perhaps it’s time I took a closer look at my own training routine.
I’m not giving up Pilates. I’m just considering making room for something different.
Because apparently, at 50, my exercise routine is getting a performance review. 😏
