2nd Age Group 🥈

Cappadocia Ultra Trail — 38km | 2nd Age Group

The goal was simple: top 3 and under 3 hours.

It didn't quite go to plan.

This year's course slightly longer and a little different from last year's, and I hadnt changed my gpx file and was surprised by that one. I felt good early and was actually sitting in 1st place in my age group with around 1.5km to go.

Then I blew up.

The last ~8km was a proper lesson in pacing, fuelling, knowing when to hold back and learning to update my course file. By the time I reached the finish, the sub-3 goal was gone and I crossed in 3:21, but still managed 2nd in my age group.

Obviously I'm happy with another podium, but I'm more interested in what I got wrong than the medal. I've been blowing up after 30k this season, even thoughh I've spent some time working on durability. Goes to show as we age, strength is such an important factor and never neglect it. not like in your 20s and 30s when you dont need to focus on it as much.
This race I almost nailed my nutrition, well I thought I had until I got light headed and realised I had an extra gel on me when I was meant to have zero remaining. oops. at one point I must have hit my alarm and not followed with eating my gel. too focused on the trail.

That's racing.

You don't learn much from the races where everything goes perfectly. The useful stuff comes from working out why you faded, what you could have done differently, and how you make sure it doesn't happen next time.

Another race, another lesson.

2nd AG • 38km • 3:21 • ~1,150m elevation

Race 3 of the season — Beypazarı 50K 🥇

This one wasn't about racing myself into the ground.

The course was challenging and very technical compared to other turkish trails I have ran. I thoroughly enjoyed the event and Beypazari itself. I cannsee this event growing substantially in the coming years, I encourage you to get to the 2027 event if you love running trchnical trails

Beypazarı was primarily a training race for Cappadocia, so the plan was simple: 5 hours, controlled effort, good fuelling, and finish strong.

I stuck to the plan almost perfectly — ~5:02 and 1st overall.

I didn't need to go to the well. The goal was to get 50K of quality work into the legs, practise everything I need for Cappadocia, and come away with enough left to continue the build.

Good racing isn't always about racing hard — sometimes the smartest race is the one that gives you exactly the training stimulus you planned for.

Three races into the season. Three different objectives.

Cappadocia is the A race.

Now we build. ⛰️

Race 1 of the season — Abant Ultra 33K 🏃‍♂️🌲

Going back to the start of the season with this one.
The 33K course didn't quite go to plan… a wrong turn meant I ended up running around 45K 😂

Still managed 6th overall and 2nd in my age group, so I'll take that.

Even better, I got to watch Chloe take on her own little race later that day, and run alongside her 🥰

One of the things I love about trail running is that you never really know exactly what the day is going to throw at you.

A good day out on the trails 🌲🏃‍♂️
2nd race for the season! back in September.

3rd in my age group at the Merrell Istanbul Ultra 30K.

Trail running has a way of keeping you honest. Every race is different, every course has its challenges, and there's always something to learn.

The goal is to keep showing up, keep exploring and see what you're capable of.

Next adventure awaits. 🇹🇷

A few days ago Chloe still had training wheels.

I wasn't sure how she'd go without them.

Turns out she was more ready than either of us realised.

Within minutes she was riding on her own.

It's a good reminder that confidence often comes after action, not before it.

Most of the things we've done in life started with uncertainty.

Running races.

Travelling.

Moving countries.

Starting businesses.

Taking the training wheels off.

Sometimes you just have to give it a go and see what happens.

Looking at this photo, you'd probably think the hardest part was the 555km.

It wasn't.

The hardest part was all the days nobody sees.

The boring runs.

The setbacks.

The injuries.

The sessions where I didn't feel like training.

Over the last month I've dealt with sickness, a foot issue, and some very inconsistent training.

It's been a good reminder of something I learned a long time ago:

Fitness comes and goes.

The habit of showing up matters more.

You don't need to be at your best every day.

You just need to keep moving forward.

Three weeks ago I was sick.
I my foot flared up.l with plantar fasciitis
Training stopped.
But movement doesn't have to.
Today wasn't about pace.
It was about getting outside, exploring Istanbul and remembering that progress isn't always measured by kilometres.
Sometimes it's measured by simply showing up.

Foot wasn’t great after my last run, so I backed off.
Did some calf + foot work first,
then tested it with an easy 5km.
Heart rate was higher than usual
(hot treadmill + no airflow),
so I adjusted effort and kept it controlled.
This is where most runners go wrong…
They skip the rehab
and rush straight back into normal training.
That’s how small issues become long-term injuries.
Be patient. Be structured.

10km easy run in Penang heat.
Heart rate was climbing fast
even at slower pace.
This is where most runners go wrong…
They try to hold normal pace
instead of adjusting effort.
Easy runs should be based on effort —
not ego.
Conditions matter.

Easy run today testing new shoes.
Yesterday had some tempo work.
Today is about keeping it controlled.
Most runners mix these up…
and end up stuck or injured.
Easy days should feel easy.
Hard days should be structured.
That’s how you improve.
