One week ago, we hosted our very first Mosaic community event, and what an afternoon it was! 💙

Over 100 children, families and team members came together for an afternoon filled with laughter, connection and so much joy.

We spent months planning, preparing and setting money aside to make this event completely free for our families. Our hope was simple: to create a space where our children could just be themselves, parents could relax, and everyone could feel genuinely welcomed and included.

And seeing it all come together was something we'll never forget.

The beautiful messages we've received from families since have meant more than we can put into words.

To our families, thank you for being part of our community and allowing us to share in your children's lives. And to our incredible team, thank you for helping bring this vision to life.

Many pieces, one beautiful whole. 🦋

A little look behind the scenes of something very special we've been working on! 💗🦋

This Saturday, we're hosting our very first free Mosaic community social event, and there's been a lot happening behind the scenes!

From the beginning, we wanted to create an event where our children and families could come together, feel welcome and have fun, without having to worry about whether the environment would work for them.

For many of the children and families we support, everyday childhood experiences like birthday parties, play centres and community events aren't always as accessible as they should be. Busy environments, sensory differences and unfamiliar expectations can make these experiences overwhelming, and sometimes mean families miss out altogether.

We wanted to do something about that. 🦋🩵

Over the past few months, we've been researching, visiting venues, planning, preparing and thinking through all the little details that might make the day that bit easier for our families.

From creating a video to help our kids know what to expect, to planning sensory spaces, familiar foods, extra activities and having our wonderful team on hand to support everyone.

We know we won't get everything perfect, and every child's needs are different. But our hope is to create an environment where families feel comfortable, supported and free to enjoy the experience in whatever way works for them.

We've also made the decision to keep the day mostly unplugged. This event isn't about creating content or promoting Mosaic. It's about creating memories, respecting our families' privacy and giving our children the opportunity to just be kids.

And importantly, we wanted to keep it completely free for our families. Events like this take time, planning and saving, but creating opportunities for our community to come together is something we genuinely value.

A huge thank you to our incredible team, who are generously volunteering their Saturday afternoon to help bring this event to life. We're so grateful for you!

We wanted to create an experience where our families don't have to wonder whether their child will be understood.

They already are. 🩵

We can't wait for Saturday! 🦋

Behaviour is information 🦋

When a child is having a hard time, our goal isn't to make the behaviour stop.

We want to understand why it's happening.

Sometimes a child is communicating that something feels overwhelming. They may need a break, help, more predictability, a different way to communicate, changes to their environment, or support to build a skill they haven't developed yet.

For autistic and ADHD children in particular, things like sensory differences, communication needs, executive functioning, uncertainty and emotional regulation can all influence what we see on the outside.

Good behaviour support looks beyond the behaviour itself.

At Mosaic, we work alongside children, families, educators, teachers, allied health professionals and other important people in their lives to understand what's happening, make meaningful changes to the environment and build practical skills that support greater communication, independence and participation.

Because the goal isn't a more compliant child. It's a child who is better understood and better supported. 🦋

Have you ever spotted one of the Mosaic team out in the wild and wondered why we didn’t come over and say hello? 👋😂

We promise we’re not being rude!

When we see a Mosaic family outside of our usual settings, we’ll generally wait for you to approach us first. This is an intentional part of respecting your privacy and confidentiality.

You might be with friends, family or someone who doesn’t know that your child accesses our services, and that’s your information to share, not ours.

We also know that for some of our kiddos, unexpectedly seeing their therapist somewhere completely outside of the context they know them in can be a little confusing!

So if you see us at Woolies, the park, grabbing a coffee or anywhere else in the community, you take the lead, and there is absolutely no pressure to say hello!

Want to say hello? Please do! We’d love to say hi. 💙
Prefer to continue on with your day? That’s completely ok too.

Either way, we’ll follow your cue.

So next time you think “Did they just pretend they didn’t see me?”... now you know why. 😂

We’re not ignoring you. We’re intentionally respecting your space, privacy and confidentiality. 🦋

Screen time… are we asking the right question? 📺📱

As both a parent and someone who works in child development, this is something I’ve found myself thinking about a lot lately.

We talk so much about how many minutes of screen time children have. But is 30 minutes watching a familiar TV show really the same experience as 30 minutes moving between games, videos and apps on an iPad?

And what if one type of screen use seems to leave your child restless and struggling to transition, while another seems to help them slow down?

So I decided to dig into the research.

And, unsurprisingly, the answer is much more nuanced than “screens are good” or “screens are bad.”

In our latest blog, we look at what the research actually tells us about screen time, including content, context, different types of screens, learning, attention and behaviour. Most importantly, we look at why the individual child needs to be part of the conversation too.

We’ve also created a FREE Screen Time & Behaviour Tracker for families who want to get a little curious about their own child and see if they can spot any patterns across the week.

Observe. Get curious. Look for patterns. 💙

Why what children watch, how they watch it and how they respond may be just as important as the number of minutes.

There’s a reason I called it Mosaic. 🦋

When I started Mosaic in 2019, I wanted the name to represent the way I saw the children and families we support.

A mosaic is made from lots of individual pieces, all different in their shape, colour and character. Each piece is unique on its own, but when they’re thoughtfully brought together, they can create something beautiful.

That became the idea behind Mosaic, and eventually, the little pieces that make up the butterfly wings in our logo.

Our children are not pieces that need to be changed to fit. They each bring their own strengths, interests, personalities and ways of experiencing the world. Around them are families, therapists, educators, clinicians and communities, each contributing something different.

Our job is to recognise those individual pieces, support them, and help bring the pieces together.

Seven years later, it still feels like the perfect name for us. 🦋

Sometimes, knowing a skill and using it in everyday life are two very different things. 🌿

A child might ask for help just fine at home, but not when they’re in the classroom. They might get dressed with a prompt, but not yet initiate the steps themselves. They might know how to join another child in play, but struggle to do so without support.

Rather than assuming, “They can do it, so they should do it,” we get curious.

What’s getting in the way?

Perhaps the skill isn’t fluent yet. Maybe it hasn’t generalised across people or environments. Prompts might still be doing some of the work, or something about the environment may be making the skill harder to use.

Learning the skill is important, but it’s only the beginning.

We want the skills we teach to extend beyond the therapy space and become part of a child’s everyday life, at home, at school, in the community and with the people around them. 💚

This one came from a little real-life moment. 🩵

One of these little people is currently very much in a “why walk when I can RUN?” phase 😅 while his big sister was absolutely convinced that she could teach him to walk beside her, hold her hand and stop when they reached the road.

So, with a grown up walking closely behind them 🙋‍♀️, we let her try.

And it took some restraint not to step in.

Not to hold his other hand. Not to keep reminding him to stay close. Not to take over because it would be easier (and probably less stressful 🤣😮‍💨).

Instead, there was one really clear boundary: when we reach the road, we stop.

Everything in between gave them a little space to practise.

She held his hand and modelled what to do. He happily followed her lead. They stopped together when asked. She felt incredibly proud that she was helping him learn 🥰 and he was pretty thrilled to be doing it with her.

Such a simple reminder that supporting independence doesn’t mean removing boundaries or compromising safety.

Sometimes it means setting the boundaries that are important, staying close enough to support when needed, and giving children a little more freedom within them.

Because when we resist the urge to constantly prompt, remind or take over, we sometimes get to see just how capable they already are. 🦋

A huge thank you to Hayley Coles from Pathways Early Intervention for an engaging and insightful professional development session.

One of the things we value most at Mosaic is creating opportunities to learn from experts in our field. We believe the moment we think we know everything is the moment we stop growing. Staying curious, challenging our thinking, and continuing to develop our skills isn’t just good professional practice, it’s how we ensure we’re providing the very best support for the children and families we work with.

Thank you, Hayley, for sharing your knowledge, practical insights, and passion with our team. We always leave inspired, with new ideas to reflect on and put into practice. 🦋

Before we teach a new skill, we ask... does this skill really matter to the child? 💜

It's easy to focus on behaviours we want to change or skills we think a child should learn. But meaningful intervention starts with a different question:
Will this make a genuine difference to this child's everyday life?

The most meaningful goals are the ones that help children:
✨ Communicate their needs.
✨ Build independence.
✨ Participate in family and community life.
✨ Have more choice and control.
✨ Be themselves, not simply appear "less different.”

At Mosaic, we believe therapy shouldn't be about changing who a child is. It's about equipping children with the skills, support and opportunities they need to participate in life in ways that are meaningful to them and their families.

When goals are meaningful, progress isn't just measured in data sheets or milestones, it's seen in everyday moments that matter. 💜

What skills have made the biggest difference in your child's everyday life? We'd love to hear your experiences in the comments 🦋
