What's one thing you wish more people understood about brain injury?
Brain injury can affect every part of a person's life, often in ways others can't see.

Everyone's experience is different, and sometimes the things people most need others to understand are the hardest to explain.

We'd love to hear from you. Share your thoughts in the comments. Your perspective could help someone else feel understood.

“We belong to a group that sees the world differently. But we are not alone.”

After a mountain bike accident changed his life, Graeme faced memory loss, changes in his thinking and a difficult journey towards accepting his brain injury.

A former Army engineer and Biomedical Manager, Graeme had always valued independence, problem-solving and staying active. Recovery challenged his sense of self, but through movement, family support and learning to listen to his body, he began finding his way forward.

Today, Graeme encourages others living with brain injury to speak up for their health, ask for help and find meaning in the small things.

His story is a reminder that recovery looks different for everyone, and that connection can make a real difference.

A reminder for your mental health.

Some days, you might have more energy than others. Some days, even the smallest things can feel overwhelming. And that's OK.
If you're living with brain injury or supporting someone you care about, remember to be kind to yourself.

🌿 Rest when you need to.
💛 Ask for help when things feel hard.
🌱 Celebrate progress, not perfection.
🧡 Set boundaries that protect your wellbeing.

You don't have to do everything at once, and you don't have to do it alone.

Which reminder do you need to hear today? Let us know in the comments.

If you need information, support or someone to talk to, contact Synapse on 1800 673 074.

Not all brain injuries are visible.

Someone might look fine at work, but still be managing fatigue, difficulty concentrating or challenges processing information.

This Safe Work Month, remember that what you see doesn't always tell the whole story.
A supportive workplace starts with listening, understanding and making adjustments that help people work safely and succeed.

What to expect from our Reconnections groups
Living with brain injury can sometimes feel isolating. Reconnections groups are a chance to connect with others who understand life after brain injury.

So, what can you expect?

Connect with others:
Meet people living with brain injury and share experiences in a supportive environment.

A supportive space:
Talk, listen or simply be part of the group. There’s no pressure to share.

Share and learn:
Exchange ideas, experiences and practical strategies that may help with everyday life.

Social connection:
Enjoy a conversation and time with people who may understand some of what you’re going through.

Groups look a little different depending on where you live. Some are online, some meet in person, and some offer a mix of both.
You can take part at your own pace and find what works for you.

Ready to reconnect? Find out more about Reconnections groups through the link in our bio or contact Synapse on 1800 673 074.

This , we're remembering that safe work is for life. One moment on the job can change everything.

In 2022, Simon was inspecting a tyre on a mine site when it exploded. Metal parts struck his head and the tyre landed on top of him. He suffered a fractured skull and a life‑altering brain injury.

Since then, Simon has relearned how to stand and walk, navigated endless appointments, and accepted that he can't return to his old work. He manages overwhelming fatigue, lost his licence for a time, and saw his friendship circle shrink.

When stress starts to build, it can be hard to know what to do in the moment. Brain injury can also affect how we experience and respond to stress.

Grounding is one simple technique that may help bring your attention back to the present.

Try the 5-4-3-2-1 grounding technique:
👀 Name 5 things you can see
✋ Name 4 things you can touch
👂 Name 3 things you can hear
👃 Name 2 things you can smell
👅 Name 1 thing you can taste

You can take your time and pause whenever you need to. There’s no right or wrong way to do it.
Small steps can help when things feel overwhelming.

Caring for someone you love can become a big part of your life. But who supports the carer?

After 25 years of caring for her husband Julian following his traumatic brain injury, Jan has learned that asking for help, connecting with people who understand and making time for herself are all part of the journey.

It took her 20 years to feel comfortable prioritising her own needs. Today, she has found ways to balance caring with travel, time for herself and the things that bring her joy.

Jan's story is a reminder that caring doesn't have to mean doing everything alone, or getting everything perfect.

❤️ Read her story and reflections on the importance of caring for yourself, too.
