Did You Have A Duck Visit Your Clinic Today?
Never a dull moment, our patients are always surprising us in new and inventive ways 🦆🦆
Everyone meet Dart the duck! He’s a mascot and beloved friend! Probably the most well behaved duck we’ve had in the clinic, not a lot of competition but that doesn’t diminish Darts’ goodness 🤣🦆

Why Orange 🔸
In 2013, during the St. Joseph Mission Residential School (1891-1981) Commemoration Project and Reunion in Williams Lake, Phyllis bravely shared her story with attendees. Her story would go on to inspire the establishment of Orange Shirt Day.
If you’re unfamiliar with the history of residential schools in Canada , or if you haven’t heard Phyllis’ story, or you’re not familiar with the 94 calls to action from The Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada, we encourage you to take the time to educate yourself.
Phyllis’ story is one of many that helps us understand this painful history and the lasting harm caused by residential schools in Canada. Facing that history can be difficult, but learning about it, acknowledging it, and continuing to listen are important parts of moving forward with understanding and reconciliation.

What You Can Do:
• Learn about the history and ongoing impacts of residential schools.
• Listen to and amplify the voices of Survivors, Indigenous communities, and knowledge keepers.
• Read the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s 94 Calls to Action and consider how you can support them.
• Support Indigenous-led organizations, initiatives, and artists.
• Have ongoing conversations about truth, justice, and reconciliation.
• Commit to meaningful action, not only on September 30th, but every day.

Today & Every Day 🔸🧡

If you can’t see the number on the yellow circle, you’ve come to the right place!

All jokes aside, hearing tests and hearing health exams are just as important as teeth cleaning and an eye exam.
You don’t wait until your teeth are falling out or until you can’t see, you DON’T wait until you can’t hear 👂🏽👁️🦷

Getting a baseline hearing test when you don’t suspect any issues is actually the best approach. Then, as you age, or have sound-related experiences in the workplace, or maybe you love attending live shows and concerts, you can come back the following year or years later, and we will have something to compare it to.

Juggling A lot?

Better Listening = Better Connection

Here are some helpful suggestions for improving phone conversations for individuals who experience hearing difficulties (or just in general)

• Prioritize the call - avoid multitasking

• Utilize the speaker option for dual-ear listening

• Minimize background noise by finding a quiet environment and turning off any distractions like the
TV or music

• Instead of saying “What,” kindly request the speaker to repeat themselves and speak slowly if necessary.

• Pose specific follow-up questions that prompt simple Yes/No responses, making them easier to understand over the phone.

• Don’t feel shame in speaking Up! about your hearing loss struggles to the person on the other end
👓 no one would bat an eye, if you needed to grab your glasses to read something..

Hearing loss is a common condition that shouldn’t be stigmatized. It’s essential to advocate for ourselves and our loved ones
Don’t hesitate to seek extra support and time for effective communication without feeling small or uncomfortable.

Hold the phone as still as possible, no moving, and now switch ears 👂🏽📱

🤣🫣 As much as we’d love to help you over the phone, we promise we don’t bite and you’ll love being in clinic.

The More You Know, The Bigger Your Circle Can Grow 🫶🏼
Inclusion and kindness go hand in hand. Many deaf and hard of hearing people go through their day with a disability that’s mostly invisible to the outside world. Unfortunately this can make you feel invisible and isolated.

As a society we can make a difference by being the change we want to see! Here are some signs in ASL that fit perfect with all the pumpkin spice 🎃 and everything nice this fall.
