A good read!
WHY CAN’T MY HORSE BUILD A TOPLINE?
If your horse has a hollow back, weak hindquarters, or seems to build muscle in some areas while losing it in others, the answer may not be “more protein” or another topline supplement.
A topline is not one muscle.
It is the visible result of how the neck, shoulders, back, abdomen, pelvis, and hindquarters work together. When the body is not using those areas correctly, the horse may compensate—sometimes developing certain muscles while other areas become weak or underdeveloped.
So before you add another scoop to the feed bucket, ask:
🔎 Is your horse actually using its hindquarters?
🔎 Is the abdominal wall engaging?
🔎 Is the horse carrying itself—or pulling itself along with the front end?
🔎 Are the shoulders developing evenly?
🔎 Is there asymmetry or muscle loss on one side?
🔎 Are the feet comfortable and allowing the horse to load evenly?
🔎 Does the saddle still fit as the horse's body changes?
🔎 Could pain, an old injury, or compensation be affecting movement?
🔎 Is the horse calm enough for the nervous system to actually learn a new movement pattern?
And nutrition absolutely matters.
Muscle needs adequate energy, quality protein and amino acids, vitamins and minerals, along with appropriate movement and recovery. But feeding provides the raw materials—movement provides the stimulus, and recovery gives the body time to adapt.
There is another important distinction:
A horse that never developed a strong topline is different from a horse that had muscle and is now losing it.
Rapid or obvious muscle loss, weakness, trembling, exercise intolerance, neurological changes, unexplained weight loss, or significant asymmetry should not simply be met with harder training. Those are reasons to involve your veterinarian.
The goal isn't to force a pretty outline.
The goal is to help the whole horse function better.
Because a topline isn't something you simply put on a horse.
It is something the horse develops when the body is capable of working correctly. 🐎

Stop chasing the muscle. Start asking why.
Inside the ebook, we explore the relationship between biomechanics, muscle development, nutrition, feet, groundwork, recovery, the nervous system, saddle fit, rider balance, pain, compensation, and veterinary red flags.
If you've been asking, “Why won't my horse build a topline?”—
maybe it's time to ask a better question:
