In Traditional Chinese Medicine, Blood is more than the red fluid circulating through your vessels. It’s the substance that nourishes every tissue in the body, anchors the mind at night, and keeps the Liver functioning smoothly. When Blood runs low, the effects show up everywhere: in your sleep, your cycle, your hair, nails, your sinews and tendons, your mood, and your energy. Let’s explore Blood through a TCM lens — functions, signs of depletion, and how to replenish through diet and lifestyle.

Blood is not just what moves through you — it’s what roots you.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, Blood does more than circulate. It’s what allows the mind to settle into sleep, what keeps the body’s tissues soft and supple, and what holds the emotions steady instead of scattered. When Blood is full, we feel grounded: clear-headed, calm, connected to our bodies. When it runs low, that rootedness goes with it.

This is why Blood deficiency so often shows up as more than just fatigue. It’s the restlessness at bedtime, the dry hair and brittle nails, the sense of being depleted in a way that doesn’t fully make sense on paper. Blood isn’t just fuel, it’s the substance that lets everything else in the body function from a place of stability rather than depletion.

Nourishing Blood isn’t about doing more. It’s about rebuilding what’s underneath everything else you’re trying to do.

Black Sesame Cookies | A Yin & Blood Tonic This recipe is a bit of a departure from a typical cookie — I built it specifically around the energetics of black sesame, which in Traditional Chinese Medicine is considered one of the best foods for nourishing Kidney and Liver Yin and Blood. Rather than starting from a standard dessert base, I worked backwards from the black sesame paste itself, layering in blackstrap molasses, cacao, and a touch of dark chocolate to support and complement that same Blood-nourishing, Yin-tonifying quality, while keeping the sweetness minimal and secondary to the ingredients doing the real work. It’s meant to be enjoyed less as a treat and more as a small, intentional bite of daily nourishment — something that tastes good and also does something for you.

Organ Meats and TCM: The Most Nutrient-Dense Foods You’re Probably Not Eating

For most of human history, eating nose-to-tail wasn’t a trend — it was common sense. Liver, kidney, heart, and other organ meats were prized, not discarded. Traditional Chinese Medicine recognized what modern nutrition science is only now catching up to: organ meats are among the most therapeutically potent foods available, and the body knows exactly what to do with them.

If you’ve been told your bloodwork is normal but you’re still exhausted, depleted, struggling with hair loss, low mood, or slow recovery — your diet may be part of the picture nobody has addressed yet.

Like many who find their way into the world of holistic medicine, my journey started with my own health struggles. I experienced firsthand the limitations of conventional treatments when dealing with chronic issues that never seemed to fully resolve. Frustrated by temporary fixes, I searched for something deeper—an approach that didn’t just treat symptoms but got to that elusive root cause.

That search led me to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), a system that looks at the body as an interconnected whole. Through acupuncture, herbal medicine, and other time-tested therapies, I found real, lasting healing. It wasn’t just about relieving discomfort; it was about restoring balance and vitality.

Inspired by my own transformation, I pursued formal training in acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine, earning my credentials as a Doctor of Acupuncture with the College of Acupuncturists of Alberta. Now, I bring that same comprehensive and compassionate approach to you at my practice in NW Calgary.

What’s going on in your body right now?Your sleep is off. Your stress is building. Your digestion isn’t right. Your child needs support. Something in your body feels out of balance, but you don’t have to stay stuck. There’s a way forward.

My mission is to help you and your family find balance and thrive, naturally. I invite you to book a session and take the first step toward true healing.
