What if, instead of saying, “I need to forgive myself,” you said, “I need to heal myself.”
I hear people say this all the time.
“I need to forgive myself for letting this happen.” “I need to forgive myself for getting to this point.” “I need to forgive myself for the choices I made.”
But I sometimes wonder, what if there is nothing to forgive?
Of course we are responsible for the choices we make as adults, and taking accountability for those choices is important. But that doesn’t mean you need to carry around blame for every difficult place you’ve found yourself in.
Sometimes there are old wounds underneath the choices we make.
You don’t have to turn everything you regret into something you need forgiveness for.
Sometimes you need to understand what happened, heal what is underneath it, and give yourself the chance to do something different now.
