The awesome Jennifer Strukoff

Therapists sometimes don’t fully understand manual lymphatic drainage (MLD) likely because what we learned in school only scratches the surface of the lymphatic system. Jennifer is a newer RMT from the yoga world who went straight into lymphatics and became a certified lymphatic therapist right after graduation. She has been a presenter at LymphyCon, the Canadian Massage Conference, and now she’s here to do some myth busting and really help us to understand what lymphatic therapy can do. Before breast cancer surgery there are a hundred things on your mind. Here is one small one that pays off later.

Ask whether both arms can be measured first.

A baseline taken before surgery gives your care team something to compare against down the road. It takes a few minutes, and it turns any future change from a question into information.

Learn why measurement matters: https://f.mtr.cool/090dlb168c

A gentle mechanical treatment doubled the brain’s fluid drainage—but so far, the breakthrough has been demonstrated only in mice.

Scientists mapped previously overlooked pathways that carry cerebrospinal fluid from the brain through lymphatic vessels around the face and neck. This fluid helps remove metabolic waste and proteins such as amyloid-beta and tau, which are associated with neurodegenerative diseases.

Using a force-controlled device to stimulate superficial lymphatic vessels through intact skin, researchers doubled cerebrospinal fluid outflow and restored impaired drainage in aged mice—without drugs or surgery.

The results could eventually inspire wearable or clinical devices designed to support the brain’s natural clearance system. However, this was not an Alzheimer’s-prevention trial, and there is currently no evidence that ordinary facial or neck massage can prevent the disease in humans. Human studies are still needed to establish safety and effectiveness.
