👀 Occupational Health Nurse Christine from our Grande Prairie office reacts to a worker manually lifting an incredibly heavy load of lead, and it raises an important question for employers and workers: When does manual material handling become an Occupational Health risk? 🤔
Lead is extremely dense, meaning even a relatively small volume can very quickly become a significant load. Attempting to manually lift or move excessive weights can increase the risk of musculoskeletal injuries, back and shoulder strains, wrist injuries, and other lifting-related injuries that can keep workers off the job for several months.
Reduce the need for manual lifting whenever possible. Depending on the task and workplace consider:
➡️ Mechanical lifting and material-handling equipment
➡️ Dollies, carts and pallet jacks
➡️ Forklifts and other powered equipment
➡️ Team lifting where appropriate
