Your face makes thousands of expressions every single day. And over time, your skin starts keeping a little record of them.
Every time you smile, frown, squint, or raise your eyebrows, the muscles underneath your skin contract, creating little folds and creases in the skin above them.
When we’re younger, our skin has more collagen, elastin, and bounce to help those folds smooth back out once the muscles relax.
But as we age, our skin naturally becomes thinner and loses some of that structural support. So those little lines that used to disappear when we stopped making an expression can start sticking around a little longer, even when our face is completely at rest.
That’s the difference between dynamic lines and static lines.
And it’s also why we think about both muscle movement AND skin quality when we’re talking about facial aging, not just volume and definition.
Because understanding why a line is forming helps us make much better decisions about how (and whether) to treat it.
