Could meditation play a role in preparing for psychedelic experiences? đ§
đď¸ This is part of what we are testing in the upcoming CAN PACT pilot trial.
A 2026 study surveyed 123 people with experience in both meditation and psychedelics to explore which meditation practices they perceived as most helpful for psychedelic preparation.
Participants rated four approaches on a scale of 0â10:
𧥠Loving-kindness meditation: 8.07/10
𧥠Open monitoring: 7.29/10
𧥠Self-transcendence: 6.96/10
𧥠Focused attention: 5.28/10
Loving-kindness meditation received significantly higher ratings than the other three approaches, suggesting that cultivating compassion and positive emotions may be especially relevant to preparation.
Participants also emphasized emotional acceptance, mindful awareness, and the ability to navigate challenging emotions.
What does this mean for research? These findings offer insight into how meditation-based preparation might be developed and studied alongside psychedelic-assisted therapy, exactly what we are doing in CAN PACT right now. However, the results reflect participantsâ perceptionsânot demonstrated clinical effectiveness.
