Day +10 after my stem cell transplant!
This has been a rough road. The chemo did its job of wiping out my old immune system, but it did such a good job that my body is taking a little longer than most to recover.
Today was the first day my WBC count went up to 400. Before today, I had been sitting at 100 for the last 7 days! My neutrophils are now up to 68%, compared to just 6% only two days ago. Neutrophils are your first line of defence against germs 🦠, so these numbers mean my body is finally starting to recover!
To help speed things along, I’m still getting Filgrastim shots twice a day, along with a high-dose steroid infusion. Together, they help stimulate the bone marrow to produce and release more white blood cells.
Tomorrow morning, I’ll have another blood test. If my WBC count is above 4,000, I’ll receive my final treatment: Rituximab! This infusion targets the CD20 protein on B cells involved in autoimmune disease. The goal is to help my new immune system identify and clear out any remaining B cells that may have survived the chemotherapy.
My red blood cells are still low, but those take longer to recover. So, I’m still tired, get out of breath easily, and have low blood pressure. Hopefully, these things will start improving as my body continues to recover!
It’s been quite a journey, and knowing what I know now, I would highly recommend looking into HSCT to others living with MS, regardless of the type. It’s a big decision, and everyone’s experience and results will be different, but I’m hopeful about what this treatment could mean for my future.
Thank you all so much for your support, messages, donations, and encouragement throughout this entire process. It has meant more to me than I can put into words. ❤️
I can’t wait to be home on Saturday and see my boys, my Mom, and Angel 🐕🦺! I have missed them so much, and I’m ready to get home and start the next part of this journey. ❤️ HSCT HEROES DIARIES Steve Brown Marvin Diotte Lucille https://gofund.me/093c28a7f
