Age Well with Charlene Day I spent years learning how to support my health, strength, and energy as I aged. I discovered that growing older doesn’t have to mean slowing down.

Now, at 75, I’m still dancing, learning, and living fully. Discover what helped me age well.

Ever notice that you can eat several pieces of candy and still feel like you haven't really eaten?

There's a reason it's useful to think about the difference between a treat and a satisfying snack.

Protein is one of the nutrients associated with satiety, or the feeling of fullness after eating. Including protein as part of a meal or snack can contribute to a more satisfying eating pattern.

That doesn't mean protein makes you immune to cravings, and it certainly doesn't mean you shouldn't enjoy Halloween treats.

It simply means that if you're genuinely hungry, candy may not be the most satisfying thing to build your snack around.

Try pairing your normal Halloween fun with foods that provide more nutritional substance.

Greek yogurt and berries.
Apple and peanut butter.
Cheese and fruit.
A hard-boiled egg with whole-grain toast.

Then enjoy the chocolate or candy because it's something you want to enjoy, not because it's the only food available.

A treat can be enjoyable. A snack can be nourishing. They don't have to be the same thing.

Which combination would you choose?

Your muscles don't know it's Halloween.

They're still working when you walk around the neighborhood, climb stairs, carry groceries, play with the kids, or simply go about your day.

And they still need the amino acids supplied by protein to support maintenance and repair.

This becomes particularly important because muscle is not something we should only think about when we're trying to look stronger.

Muscle supports everyday function.

It helps us move, maintain physical strength, and perform the activities we want to keep doing throughout life.

Regular physical activity and adequate nutrition, including protein, are important pieces of maintaining muscle.

So while Halloween might change what happens on your plate for one evening, there's no reason it has to completely change the nutritional habits that support your body the rest of the time.

Your muscles don't take the holiday off.

Neither does your body.

Here's an important nutrition lesson for the day after Halloween:

You don't need to undo anything.
You don't need to skip breakfast because you ate candy.
You don't need to eliminate carbohydrates.
You don't need to punish yourself with an extreme workout.

And you don't need to start a restrictive “reset.”

One day of eating differently doesn't define your overall nutritional pattern.

Instead, simply return to your normal habits.

Have a nourishing breakfast.
Include protein throughout your day.
Drink water.
Eat fruits and vegetables.
Move your body.
Get back to your regular sleep routine.

Healthy eating isn't about being perfect every day. It's about the pattern you create over time.

Halloween can be a celebration.

November 1 can simply be another day of taking care of yourself.

The goal isn't to compensate for one day. It's to keep building healthy habits over many days.

What is one healthy habit you'll return to after Halloween?

Has it ever occurred to you when you’re actually eating most of your protein?

In the mornings, a person typically begin with simple options like toast, cereal, and coffee. Lunch is often a quick snack, while dinner tends to be focused on protein.

However, it's essential to note that our bodies need more protein throughout the day, as dinner alone may not meet all our nutritional requirements.

Protein plays a critical role in keeping our bodies functioning by aiding in tissue maintenance and repair, enzyme and hormone production, and supporting immune function.

Insufficient protein intake can lead to something researchers refer to as Anabolic Resistance, diminishing our muscles' responsiveness.

As we age, the importance of protein escalates, becoming vital for maintaining health and strength.

To enhance your meal planning, consider adding items like eggs or Greek yogurt to breakfast.

Upgrade your snacks with fruits, berries, or peanut butter. Incorporate more salads into your meals for better balance. Enhance your oatmeal with fruits like raspberries or bananas, and ensure protein is a regular part of your meals.

Remember, lunch shouldn’t be overlooked; it plays an essential role in maintaining your overall health and strength.

Ever finish a meal and find yourself looking for a snack an hour or two later?

Sometimes the question isn't simply “Did I eat enough?”

It can also be “What was actually in my meal?”

Protein is one of the nutrients that can contribute to feelings of fullness and satisfaction. Including a protein source as part of a meal can help make it more satisfying.

And that's one reason protein is worth thinking about beyond the gym.

Instead of constantly trying to eat less, consider looking at the quality and balance of what you're already eating.

A meal that includes protein, fiber-rich foods, carbohydrates, and healthy fats gives your body a wider range of nutrients to work with.

So the next time you find yourself hungry again surprisingly soon, take a look at the whole meal.

It might tell you something.
What's one meal that keeps you satisfied for hours?

If someone asked you to name a high-protein meal, what would you think of?

Chicken and rice?
Steak?
Maybe a protein shake?

But protein doesn't have to wait until lunch or dinner.

Breakfast can include eggs, Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, tofu, beans, or other protein-rich foods.

Lunch can include fish, chicken, lentils, beans, tofu, or other options.

Snacks can also contribute protein depending on what you choose.

The point isn't to obsess over protein at every meal.

It's simply to recognize that protein can be part of your entire day's eating pattern, not something you squeeze in at the end of the day.

Sometimes the easiest nutrition change is simply noticing what has been missing from your routine.

Take a look at your breakfast tomorrow. Where's the protein?

You don't have to work out to need protein.

Your body is constantly doing maintenance work behind the scenes.

Protein provides amino acids that your body uses to build and maintain tissues, including muscle.

But that's not all.

Protein is also involved in making enzymes, hormones, antibodies, and many other proteins your body needs.

So while protein gets a lot of attention in the fitness world, its role is much bigger than muscle-building.

You need protein because you're a human being with a body that is constantly working.

That's why protein belongs in the everyday wellness conversation.

Not just the workout conversation.

Here's an interesting nutrition experiment:
Don't change what you eat.
Just look at your meals differently.

For one day, look at breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks and ask:
“Where is the protein?”

You might discover that breakfast is mostly carbohydrates.

Your afternoon snack might be mostly carbohydrates.

Lunch might have a small amount of protein.

And dinner is doing all the heavy lifting.

That doesn't mean your meals are “bad.”
It simply gives you information.

Protein is an essential nutrient, and spreading protein-containing foods throughout your eating pattern can be a practical way to support your overall nutrition.

Sometimes improving your diet doesn't start with removing something.

It starts with noticing what's missing.

How is your blood sugar today?

How is your blood sugar today?

Your blood sugar isn't something your body thinks about only after you eat.

Your body is constantly working to keep glucose available for energy while also keeping the amount circulating in your blood within an appropriate range.

Glucose is an important fuel for your cells.

When you eat, carbohydrates are digested and glucose enters your bloodstream. In response, your pancreas releases insulin, which helps move glucose from the bloodstream into cells where it can be used for energy.

But between meals, while you're sleeping, and while you're going about your day, your body is still managing this system.

That means blood sugar isn't simply a “food problem.”

It's part of a much bigger system involving nutrition, hormones, physical activity, sleep, and your body's internal clock.

This is one reason I think it's more useful to understand how the system works than to become afraid of individual foods.

Your body is doing this work every day, whether you're thinking about it or not.
